The Sacramento Republic F.C. and the Colorado Springs Switchbacks F.C. had a rematch Friday night at Sand Creek Stadium. Both clubs needed a win and the important three points in the standings to secure a high seed in the playoffs. Sacramento is looking to secure a home playoff spot whilst Colorado Springs was trying to hang on to first place in the Western Conference. The last time these clubs met was on August 8th at Bonney Field where the Switchbacks prevailed over the Republic F.C. with a 1-0 victory.
A crowd of over three thousand Switchback fans entered Sand Creek Stadium Friday to cheer on their football club. The game however was delayed for over an hour due to a thunderstorm but when the danger of lightning passed, the match went off without a hitch. Like a replay of last Saturday, the visiting club game out of the gate making a statement by scoring in the opening minutes when Sacramento’s Tommy Stewart scored a goal in the second minute (with an assist from Danny Barrera). Colorado Springs would tie the game at 1-1 in the twenty-first minute when midfielder Luke Vercollone kicked in an equalizer off of a penalty kick.
The Switchbacks would take the lead in the thirty-eighth minute when Luke Vercollone recorded a brace off of a one-on-one with Republic F.C. goalie Patrick McLain going up 2-1 and they would hold on head into the locker room at halftime holding on to a one goal lead. Sacramento came out to the pitch in the second half in third gear as they looked to score an equalizer by attacking Colorado Springs defense aggressively. But the Switchbacks would increase their lead by two when Chandler Hoffman scored on an unassisted goal in the seventy-eighth minute to take a commanding 3-1 lead with less than twelve minutes left to play in regulation. The Republic F.C.’s persistence would finally pay off late in the game as they would score an equalizer in the eighty-second minute with a goal from Mickey Daly (assisted by Derrick Foran) cutting the lead to 3-2.
The Switchbacks forward Davy Armstrong would lose his composure in the final minute of the game and was issued a red card for reckless play giving the Republic F.C. a man advantage. With seconds left on the clock, Ivan Mirković would kick in an unassisted long distance goal tying the game at 3-3 ending the game in a draw. Sacramento heads home for a meeting with the Real Monarchs S.L.C. next Saturday on August 22nd. Tickets for that game can be purchased via Ticketmaster and the match will be televised locally on CW 31.
