The Sacramento Republic F.C. (6-5-0) hosted the visiting Real Monarchs S.L.C. (1-6-3) Saturday night at Bonney Field in front of 11,422 rabid fans. The game started out fairly evenly in the opening minutes of the first half as both clubs sized each other on the pitch. Real Monarchs drew first blood by scoring off of a penalty kick in the seventh minute when Max Rauhofer punched it with a rocket shot that sailed past Patrick McLain giving his club a 1-0 lead. Sacramento battled back to occupy the Monarchs side of the pitch for a majority of the first half looking to score an equalizer.
Persistence paid off as the Republic F.C. achieved their objective in the nineteenth minute when David Estrada blasted one in with an assist from Ivan Mirkovic to even the score at 1-1. The rest of the first half was a defensive battle between both clubs as they fought tooth and nail on the pitch looking to gain any kind of advantage. Despite racking up six shot-on-goals, Sacramento was unable to break the tie in the waning minutes of the first. As the final whistle blew signaling the end of the half, both clubs went to their respective locker rooms tied at 1-1.
The Republic F.C.’s defense were on their heels in the first fifteen minutes of the second half as the Real Monarchs desperately attacked their goal with an all out assault. Sacramento held on strong as they beat back the Monarchs denying them any chance of a scoring opportunity. At the sixty-fifth minute Nemanja Vukovic was stepped on a few times during a scrum in front of the Monarchs goal resulting in a yellow card for number twelve as he protested to the referee to no avail. The Republic F.C. turn the tide offensively as they now controlled the tempo of the game as they went all out in attack mode to break the 1-1 tie.
The game went back and forth in the latter half of the second as the Republic F.C. and Real Monarchs moved the ball with ease up and down the pitch but neither club could punch one in. Tommy Stewart came into the game in the final fifteen minutes in a shrewd move by Coach Preki giving Sacramento additional firepower late in the game and it was a nail bitter as it came down to the last five minutes as both clubs played with reckless abandonment. Ivan Mirkovic was handed a yellow card in the eighty-eight minute adding to Sacramento’s foul woes as the penalties piled up. The Real Monarchs earned a yellow card in the eighty-ninth minute as Max Alvarez was clipped from behind by Emilio Orozco giving the Republic F.C. a chance to score in the final minute of the game.
Five minutes of extra time was added to the match as Sacramento made another offensive push to break the 1-1 tie. The game turned into a chaotic mess as a Real Monarch player collapsed from an injury inside the goalie box with players and fans alike displaying their displeasure as the referees established order to resume the action but it ends in a draw as the crowd vehemently booed the Real Monarch players as they waved to the fans and blew kisses at them whilst relishing in their anger.
