During the recent visit of Pope Francis in Philadelphia, the one thing you heard from residents is that it felt like a police state.
It’s easy to understand how people who weren’t Catholic or visitors could feel like that.
In the weeks approaching the visit residents were bombarded daily with announcements by Mayor Nutter and were told that a lot of things would be closed.
The message that taxpayers got through these announcements was quite clear: Don’t come out. Stay home.
Businesses closed, mail service stopped, public transportation was curtailed, and trash pickup was cancelled. It just wasn’t in the area where the Pope would be, but throughout the city.
Areas close to where the Pope was actually going to be had check points installed and people were searched.
The city also seemed to be overrun with federal agents (Homeland Security and the Secret Service in particular), the military and cops. A lot of cops.
A police state is when the activities of a state or country’s people are controlled by the government that affects their social, economic and/or political life.
This government then will use police and even secret police to suppress as well as control the freedom and will of its people.
Throughout history there have been many prime examples of police states such as the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Castro’s Cuba, apartheid in South Africa and North Korea which still exists today.
During the protests in the 1960s there were those who felt that certain cities, especially those that had large college campuses, had put into practice certain forms of being a police state.
This country also practiced levels of police state during McCarthyism in the 1950s, the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, slavery during the 18 and 19 centuries as well as the Removal Act of 1830 in which American Indians were forcibly taken off their land and placed somewhere that the government had designated for them in order to take the Indians native land.
There are those who now believe that this ugly part of history is behind them; that America is more civilized and wouldn’t stoop to that level.
However, the more big business and special interest groups purchase the elected officials in Washington D.C. the more likely it is that this country will become a police state.
In some ways, it’s already beginning.
There are a couple of ways that the government is currently using police state tactics especially in urban areas and here are a few:
1. Raiding, harassing or intimidating people who have limited economic means to fight them.
Stories of police kicking down doors in the inner city without a warrant or ending up targeting the wrong house are frequent in the inner cities of America.
There has also been the practice of seizing someone’s home or possessions without that person being convicted of any wrong doing.
2. The militarization of local law enforcement.
Every person has heard of at least one story where small town police department purchases used military equipment with the sole purpose of using it on the very people they are supposed to protect.
Police departments across the country and especially in urban areas have adopted aggressive military-style tactics that are used more in the movies than in actual combat situations. These scenarios where the tactics are used have been splashed across every nightly news program on television.
3. Protecting the corrupt.
Corporations now own the elected seats of politicians in every state so it’s only natural that laws were passed to protect these corporations. If you hurt a CEO/CFO’s feelings, set out to harm a corporation because of their business practices or the fact that they make an inferior product, you could end up in jail.
4. Saying good-bye to the rent-a-cop.
Whenever there is a terrorist alert, it is not unusual to see police standing outside of banks guarding them. To that extent, government buildings are now patrolled by robo cop type of law enforcement; suited with bullet-proof protective clothing with equally impressive fire power. In many large companies such as school district administration buildings, hospitals or law offices, you may have to provide picture identification that is then either scanned into a computer system or copied onto a ledger.
5. Homeland Security.
Nothing says police state like Homeland Security.
The agency’s objective is to make sure that this country is safe from acts of terrorism and anything else that is deemed harmful to the country’s way of life.
On a positive note the agency has made learning about emergency preparedness more available.
On a bad note, it sometimes over-reaches and encroaches on the rights of the individual.
They have admitted – finally – to using Stingray devices that act as actual cell phone towers convincing phones to tap into them. From there, the feds are able to listen in on your conversations, get access to text messages and track your location without having to apply for a pesky warrant.
These people are not suspected terrorists – they are everyone.
Regardless whether you have personally experienced being in the middle or on the fringes of a police state, once an emergency hits and panic sets in from those who have failed to prep, your live will revert to a police state in order for the politicians to maintain control as well as power.
Here’s the shocker – the government and its flunkies are prepared for it. They have a plan and it will be executed.
So how will you survive a police state?
If you have prepped and have a good supply of food and water you’ll be okay.
If you have followed the Philly urban prepper’s advice, secured your perimeter and have made your home more secure than you’ll be really okay.

So here’s what you need to do:
1. Don’t go outside.
You don’t need to be one of those people that need to go out to investigate, take pictures and acquire bragging rights that you were in the middle of it as things were happening.
2. Purchase a transistor radio, CB radio or scanner.
In case of a blackout or loss of energy, you’ll need to have a way to listen to any broadcasts so you are aware of everything going on.
If you decide to go with a transistor radio, make sure you get one that takes batteries and buy an ample supply of the batteries, but information may be limited to radio broadcasts.
Please be advised that pursuant to Executive Order 10995, the government has the right to seize control of all communication media which includes radio stations. This means that you won’t get any information that the government doesn’t want you to have.
CB radios and scanners let you communicate or listen in on anything that’s on out there.

3. Prep for loss of energy (electricity and gas).
If you are a seasoned prepper, you probably already have an abundance supply of candles, hurricane lamps, kerosene heaters, propane heaters and stoves, batteries, flashlights, grills, and cylinders of fuel (propane, kerosene and gas).
If you don’t have any of these things, you should start getting them because in a police state they will be as critical as a food or water supply.
Executive Order 10997 gives the government permission to seize and control all forms of energy such as: electrical power, gas, petroleum, and fuels. This includes coal.

4. Take your money out of the bank.
Although people may be tempted to keep all their money in the bank of their choice, during a police state that’s not really a great idea because banks are basically run by the laws that the government has established.
You also don’t want to have any debts that are connected to the banking institution if you can help it.
Since taking office, President Barack Obama signed 25 orders into law and all of these orders will have a huge impact on what happens to people when the government declares a state of emergency.
Many laws that already existed were signed into law by President John Kennedy in 1962.
These orders will seriously change whatever freedoms and privileges you thought you had.
One of these orders, Executive order 11921, states that during any emergency the government can take control over all banking institutions and this also includes salaries, wages or credit.
Once this order is to put into action, it cannot be reviewed for six months even if the emergency is over in a month or two.
In simple terms, anything you have in the bank cannot be accessed as long as that executive order is in play whether it is for six months or six years.

5. Understanding the reality of the situation.
No matter how far you believe that America has progressed over the years, what happened in Hitler’s Germany and with the Removal Act of 1830 can easily happen again.
One of the executive orders that exists is Executive Order 11004.
This order gives the government the right to uproot people (they call it relocating communities), decide what areas should be abandoned and where to put people. This is exactly what they did to the American Indians.
This gives the government the right to seize farms and anything they deem to be of value to them.

6. The role of law enforcement especially when it applies to the world that exists now.
There was probably a time when a majority of the people believed that the police was their friend and it was their job to protect and serve.
In recent years, that couldn’t be any further from the truth.
Law enforcement’s job is to enforce whatever the government is doing and to that extent, this country is already in a police state.
The injustice and brutality that seems to be a current epidemic among officers isn’t new.
It’s been going on during their entire history.
It’s what the politicians want them to do so people think twice before they protest or dispute whatever oppressive legislation that these officials are in the process of passing.
The words flow easily from police officers’ lips: “I don’t make the laws, I just enforce them.”
It is the politicians –state, federal or local – who put the laws into effect that gives law enforcement a wide birth in oppressing people.
Further protection is offered to these officers through departmental policies and union contracts both of which are supported by local politicians.
7. Understand the procedure.
After a collapse or a state of emergency four things are going to happen and probably in quick succession of one another:
1) Panic will set in.
2) People will take to the streets seeking help, food and/or shelter.
3) The government will put all those executive orders into place.
4) Law enforcement will take to the street to establish order and control by any means necessary usually through the use of violence.
The government has removed or closed down mostly all public shelters and they expect you to stay in your home. They refer to it as shelter in place. They don’t want you out on the street unless they tell you to go out on the street.
This is why prepping is important. It’s about your survival and your safety.
The government and law enforcement are prepared to deal with anyone who may disrupt whatever they are trying to accomplish.
Get your supplies in order and your experience with living in a police state will be a little more tolerable and, with any luck, you will come out of it unscathed.
