On September 28, “Naked and Afraid” posted to their Twitter page photos of the first two survivalists of the new season. Gary Underhill the ex-cop and Kim Kelly the loner, will have to learn to survive together in the remote and dangerous Panamanian jungle. While there they will need to make a fire, find food and water, and build a shelter so they will be able to complete the 21-day challenge. They will also have to deal with the numerous annoyances and dangers, such as biting insects and dangerous snakes, like the fer-de-lance pit viper.
According to his bio on the Discovery website, Underhill is 52 years old and married with seven children. Currently hailing from Reno, Nevada he works as a tactical and defensive firearms instructor. His survival skills are impressive and include shelter building, which will definitely come in handy. He is mainly trained in desert survival, and it is not clear how that can serve him in the jungle, but he should know a few skills that can be adapted for this challenge.
Underhill served as a police officer in Phoenix, Arizona and as a deputy sheriff in Carson City, Nevada and after 26 years, he retired in 2012. He also served in the military and as a reservist, he was deployed to Egypt (1999), Afghanistan (2001) and eventually was sent to Iraq (2009) where his duties included the dangerous task of escorting convoys. As a Christian, Underhill will undoubtedly rely on his faith to help see him through whatever challenges come his way.
Kim Kelly is 23 years old, single and lives in Moab, Utah. Her bio states that she is proficient in primitive cooking and that she sees herself as mentally tough and having survival grit, which should help her to stay focused on seeing the challenge through to the end. Raised by a single mother and one of seven children, she spent most of her time outside in nature. As an adult, there are many things she would like to do, such as educating others on how to provide for themselves. In her spare time some of the things she enjoys are riding her bike, cooking and gardening. She would like to be considered an emotional, spiritual, physical and mental asset to others. Although she considers herself a loner, she does find enjoyment in being around people.
Underhill and Kelly couldn’t be further apart in regard to their ages, life experiences and skill levels. As a father with several children, will Underhill try to parent Kelly, or will he treat he as an equal? She would most likely resent such an attempt and a lot of dynamics could come into play. Overall, it will be interesting to see how these two personalities mesh and how it all plays out.
