‘The Muppets’ has officially premiered on ABC September 22, 2015 and it certainly delivered dialog, situations and characters that have adults wondering if anyone can tell them how to get, how to get to this new grown up Sesame Street. It’s on the money as it showcases our beloved senior Sesame Street stars in grownup reality roles The show’s camera angles take out a page out of another ABC hit, ‘Modern Family’, however, it comes across as a backstage pass to a muppet reality show/documentary. Kermit the Frog stars as the executive producer of Miss Piggy’s talk show ‘Up Late With Miss Piggy’ and lets it be known in the very first line that there are some issues when you’re working with your ex. Kermit who once found Piggy “sexy” has no problem stating: “If you take dating out the equation, she’s a lunatic.” Now, America’s favorite amphibian is living in a “bacon wrapped hell”.
And the heavens have finally smiled on Fonzie the Bear who, despite failing to deliver on his stand up comedy, has himself a human girlfriend who is “wukka wukka” gorgeous! Fonzie finds himself in an unbearable situation with Becky’s father who throws a few bear stereotypes at him while they eat salmon. It also doesn’t get any better when he tries to impress them by bringing them to the set where he and the other muppets work. Finally, we meet Denise. And to be honest, after seeing the cuddle time with Kermit, I am betrayed into feeling like a heartbroken child whose mixed species parents only stayed together until the kids went off to college. We were front row for the wedding in ‘Muppets Take Manhattan’ and all of that is down the drain for the likes of Denise with her slanted eyes, southern drawl and she makes you just want to figure out what lured Kermie away from his Piggy. But be sure to watch as we do get to see when Piggy and Kermit do break up, and to our surprise, it’s not filled with the usual assault we’ve come to expect from the former Mrs. The Frog.
“We started dating couple months ago and she’s a producer for the network,” Kermit explains stating he and Denise met at a cross promotion event. “We ended up cross promoting. What can I say. I’m attracted to pigs.” Imagine Dragons make a quick cameo but Elizabeth Banks really gets the run around after Piggy lets it be known she doesn’t want her there. All in all ‘The Muppets’ have matured since their Jim Henson days. The new show is a delightful dose of situation comedy that will certainly keep ABC’s ratings high and become a new water cooler topic. I’m not expecting to see Elmo, Zoe or Baby Bear’s as this is a bit past their bedtime.
