For those we love fish and other sea creatures, you will want to plan a trek to the Detroit area’s newest attraction — the Michigan Sea Life Aquarium (just opened on January 29, 2015) located in a most unusual venue — inside the Great Lakes Crossing Outlets mall in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Michigan Sea Life Aquarium Home to 5000 sea animals ( and more than 250 species), the brand new 35,000 square foot Michigan Sea Life Aquarium features a journey through 10 themed zones (including Freshwater, Harbor, The Shoal, Mangrove Swamp, Turtle Shelter, Coral Reef, Shark Shipwreck and Stingray Bay) exploring sea life from the coast to the depths of the ocean.
Among the sea creatures that visitors can observe are sharks, stingrays, seahorses, jellyfish, lobsters, starfish, shrimp, crabs, several species of tropical fish and fresh water fish, sea urchins, turtles and a don’t-miss attraction —a Great Pacific octopus. Visitors also can have a touchpool experience where they can hold a crab and touch a starfish (check out the chocolate chip starfish!) and observe sea creatures like shrimp up close and personal.
The Aquarium’s biggest attraction is its 180 degree underwater Ocean Tunnel that visitors walk through giving them an amazing view of the sea bed as the sea creatures swim around them and overhead.
Visitors will also get lots of information about a wide variety of animals along the path with easy readable signs posted in each zone.
Be sure to check out the times for several fun talks and feed shows that are scheduled throughout the day.
For a small additional fee visitors can take a 20 minute Behind the Scenes tour where they get to learn about the Aquarium’s water filtration system, see the facility’s laboratory, get a glimpse into the Quarantine area where animals with special needs stay for a time and get a lesson on food preparation for the various species and learn exactly what they eat and how many times a day they are given food.
The Aquarium also offers the Sea Stars Aqua Play, a children’s play area.
Hours for the Michigan Sea Life Aquarium are 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $23.50 for adults (13+) and $18.50 for children (3-12).
