The Hype Magazine after a blazing hot first year on newsstands nationally and internationally, received the SCM Awards “Magazine Publication of the Year” honors on Sunday, May 16, 2015. In its seventh year, the SCM Awards is considered industry wide, as one of the most important non-televised awards ceremonies in urban entertainment. The Hype Magazine’s award was presented by Core DJ CEO Tony Neal, this years SCM Awards “Lifetime Achievement” winner.
The Hype Magazine vied with nine other magazine finalists, emerging the undisputed winner amongst a strong roster of entertainment magazines from various regions of the country. The Hype Magazine took the podium along with other major industry personalities including: Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Tony Neal, CEO of the world famous Core DJs’ Hot Boy Turk, Comeback Artist of the Year; DJ Scream, Best Mixtape DJ; Bigga Rankin, Best All Around DJ; Fleet DJs, DJ Crew of the Year, Hot 107.1 (Memphis), Best Radio Station; Lil Wyte, Album/Mixtape of the Year (Major) for “No Sick Days”; Snootie Wild, The Pimp C. Rap Artist of the Year; D. Nelson, The Bobby Womack R&B Artist of the Year and more.
Emerging in 2002 as a digital only platform and having captured the number one digital magazine mantle, The Hype Magazine added newsstands to its list of accomplishments in December of 2013. Within 12 months, CEO/Publisher Jameelah “Just Jay” Wilkerson positioned the outlet into an internationally distributed publication, rapidly expanding from domestic only distribution channels.
Currently, The Hype Magazine is available in major retail outlets such as Walgreen’s, Barnes and Noble, Target, K-Mart, 7-11, Books A Million, airports and other retailers. The magazine’s print issues are distributed in the Continental United States and outlying territories, Asia and Europe.
This year’s “Magazine Publication of the Year” recognition from the SCM Awards, represents a lot says our Publisher, Jameelah “Just Jay” Wilkerson, “For people to recognize your hard work and dedication means a lot.” CEO/Publisher Jameelah Wilkerson received a proclamation from the City of Atlanta recognizing her business acumen and leadership of the emerging publication. Editor-in-Chief, Jerry Doby, an internationally published journalist, earned three “Hot 500” awards during his tenure with the Yahoo Contributor Network and was nominated in 2014 for “Journalist of the Year” by the SEA Awards along with The Hype Magazine’s nomination for “Magazine Publication of the Year”.
