Clevelanders who didn’t quite get their fill of fun and food and thrills at the Cuyahoga County Fair can continue their gleeful experience at the Great Geauga County Fair in Burton, Ohio on Thursday, September 3 through Monday, September 7 (Labor Day). It is approximately a 50 minute drive from Cleveland.
The oldest continuous county fair in Ohio, the Great Geauga County fair is celebrating its 192nd year and also holds the distinction of being one of the oldest existing agricultural fairs in the United States. This year’s Fair features over 2000 animals and 13,000 exhibits in addition to amusement rides, live entertainment, games, demonstrations and of course, plenty of food. Last year, more than 206,000 people attended the Fair.
Some of the more unusual contests at the Great Geauga Fair include a Chicken Flying Contest, a Frog Jumping Contest and a Rooster Crowing Contest. Other activities at the Fair include a Demolition Derby (Thursday and Saturday), a Band-O-Rama featuring area high school bands performing live (on Sunday), a Truck Pull and a Tractor Pull (both $10 admission), harness racing, a Fireman’s Water Battle, a Diaper Derby and always a crowd favorite — pig racing.
Additional attractions at the Fair include a hot air balloon ascension, magic shows, woodcarving demonstrations, a Junior Fair Livestock Sale, a circus show and lots of award-winning animals and prize-winning vegetables and fruits. And don’t forget the Apple Pie Contest on Saturday, September 5.
There will be a wide variety of entertainment (over 65 performers, acts and shows) including musical groups of different genres, cloggers, a polka band, a barbershop quartet, a puppet show and balloon animals. A special attraction is a free concert by country singer Chris Higbee on Friday evening at 8 p.m.
Hours for the Great Geauga Fair are 9 a.m. – midnight all days. Exhibit Halls are open 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. all days but Monday (Labor Day) when the exhibits close at 8 p.m. Amusement rides are open daily noon-midnight. Admission to the Fair is $8 per day for adults. Children 12 and under are free. Amusement rides are extra. On Friday, seniors (65+) and veterans get free admission. Remember, there is an additional charge for the Demolition Derby, Truck Pull and Tractor Pull.
