If you love cats, the Garden State Cat Expo/Show is a must-attend event. Hosted by the Garden State Cat Club, the annual event took place July 18-19, 2015, at the Garden State Exhibition Center in Somerset, New Jersey.
This year’s event was themed Mardi Gras which gave the entrance and show floor a festive and colorful flair and the competitions a “Meow-di Gras” twist. Even the rescue groups showcasing adoptable cats picked up on the theme with cats dressed to impress.
The annual event is intended to inform and educate attendees about the world of cats. The event is not only a place to stage competitions between purebred felines. Household pets now compete, shelter cats become Stars, rescue groups and shelters bring greater awareness to their adoptable pets by participating in the Adopt-A-Cat area, and vendors showcase their pet-related products and services to a big crowd eager to buy and learn. Many were returning vendors, with some new to the event, such as the Somerset County Animal Response Team (CART).
“This is our first time at this event,” said Cindy O’Connor, representative for CART. “We are excited to be here and create awareness for the Somerset County Animal Response Team.”
The Cat Agility competition was fun to watch, while Cats in Cars (therapy cats Waffle and Tirzah) rode around the show floor in their personalized car spreading smiles and making new friends.
The expo presented a number of activities and seminars that were intended to educate attendees and help encourage children to own, love, and care for cats.
The Garden State Cat Club is a registered nonprofit organization. The club’s expo is one of the top five cat shows held in the United States, and it is definitely the largest cat show in New Jersey. The Cat Expo is also the club’s major fundraiser which enables them to continue supporting cats in a variety of ways including donations to feline foundations and pet visitation programs to nursing homes and schools.
