Dropout rates continue to plague many intercity school districts including Detroit. Equally and maybe even more troubling is the care of the mentally ill. Across all barrios Americans both rich and poor from every background find the care for her mentally ill inadequate.
In terms of consequence to community, life and limb more and more the middle, upper middle and upper classes would seem to be getting hit at a much higher and more intense rate than lower classes.
This alone seems to indicate that the problem is far reaching and beyond the ability for the average American family to handle on their own.
As a society Americans tend to be totally ignorant to the signs of mental illness.
Dylan Roof one of the most recent dangerous killers that cold bloodily gunned down and killed 9 unarmed civilians in a church’s bible study meeting. Roof left White Knoll in the middle of repeating the ninth grade dropping out of school.
Roof came from a clear middle class and well to do family. His dad a contract with some alleged history of abuse. His grandfather is attorney Joseph Roof. Maybe if laws are instated to make families responsible for their children including the mentally ill society could see a better result.
The government has instead in many cases unleashed the individuals on the public with no recourse. In a society where getting a gun is easier than getting a job, help and a college education or an education of any kind we witness more and more of these types of events.
Dylan Roof showed troubling signs of mental illness early on. Yet, everyone involved in his care would prove seemly powerless to do anything about his obvious derailment.
Not much is known of Roof’s biological mother. She divorced his father. His father remarried.
Roof had a history of dropping out of school and serious drug use. He began withdrawing from friends and began sleeping in his car. No doubt some would surely wonder how someone with no job, a drop out and drug user could ever afford his drug habit, a car (especially given the fact that he had no driver’s license), and a multitude of guns.
Dylan roof would become increasingly isolated.
Like so many other mentally ill Roof gave countless cries for help. In the weeks leading up to the massacre of the innocent nine church members Roof couldn’t find his gun. He called his mother looking for it. His mother would simply state she did not have it. One would have to wonder in what type of environment is it normal for a young man with no job nor high school diploma to call mom in the wee hours of the morning searching for his gun and never mind the fact that it’s apparently okay for him to own one.
After calling mom with no satisfaction he proceeds to call his dad with the same question. He is told by his dad that his mom had his gun but was afraid he’d hurt himself. Not to mention that his dad actually bought and gave him a gun for his twenty first birthday just months earlier. Is it no wonder that some might feel the parents bare some culpability in the blood shed at Mother AME church?
Maybe to the mother’s credit she did somehow delay what Roof proudly announce for months the roofless, heartless taking of life from the very young to the very old in God’s house no less.
Did the dad have a care for his son or the innocent life his son would take? Bartenders are responsible for giving alcoholics too much drink when they eventually go out and kill innocent people. Maybe it’s time parents of the mentally ill be held accountable when they make a gun available to the mentally ill.
