When it comes to common sense — a lot of people seem to be lacking it these days. To combat this rising social issue, actress and comedian Lydia Nicole created the ‘Common Sense Mamita’.
These streetwise tips earned a weekly place on Latin Heat and more recently added to RoblesandRosado.com.
Now, Lydia has deemed May 28th as National Common Sense Day. To bring attention to the lack of rational thought and deliver her hilarious ‘tough-love’ honesty, fans can ask The Common Sense Mamita for advice during a live-stream event. Actually, she is hosting four separate 30-minute live-streaming events on May 26th and May 28th at 5:00pm Eastern and Pacific Standard Times on Periscope and Meerkat.
I recently interviewed Lydia Nicole, The Common Sense Mamita, to find out more about what she’s doing and why.
Give us an overview of the streetwise “Common Sense Mamita.”
LYDIA: Common Sense Mamita is a humorous weekly vlog series I do in which I give tips and pointers on etiquette, social media, friendships, relationships, shopping, finances, tipping, customer service, and self-help for those in need of common sense.
What inspired you to create the vlog?
LYDIA: I found that I was attracting people in the entertainment industry that were lacking common sense skills. I also found that so many of my “Hollywood” friends would call me to give them advice and help in making decisions. Some of the advice they were seeking could have been made if they had some common sense. So about two-years ago I started writing down some of the stuff that I was getting asked and thought if my friends need this information there must be others needing it as well and that’s how Common Sense Mamita was born.
What do you hope audiences take away from it?
LYDIA: I want people to make better choices when it comes to taking care of themselves, and others because it will make the community better.
Did you know from the beginning your ‘tough-love’ advice would resonate so well with fans or was that a surprise?
LYDIA: Actually, I’ve never thought about it, it just comes naturally. I find that most people are afraid to tell the truth and I think when you love people and care about what happens to them, you have to tell them the truth otherwise you aren’t really being a good friend. So, my tough love advice is based on wanting the best for my friends.
You’ve covered a lot of topics as the “Mamita”, but if you had to pick one – which do you think says it best?
LYDIA: I would have to say that it isn’t a specific topic but it would be the Common Sense Quiz vlog I did a while back because it covers a few areas.
Your roots are in stand-up; any plans to head back?
LYDIA: Yes, eventually, I get go back to it but first I have my eyes set taking my one person show “A Rose Grows In Spanish Harlem” on the road. It is a dramedy based on my childhood. I love performing and the one person show format allows me to tap into my acting and stand up together. There is nothing better than that.
What else are you working on?
LYDIA: Currently, I am producing Robert Townsend’s new romantic comedy indie film “Playin’ For Love” that stars Robert (who also produced, directed, , Salli Richardson-Whitfield and Jenifer Lewis.
Anything else you’d like to share with your fans?
LYDIA: Yes, I am declaring May 28, 2015 as National Common Sense Day because we need to restore common sense in not only Hollywood but in the entire country. So, please, please please share Common Sense Mamita with those friends who have no common sense help get our country back to being smart again.
Thanks, Lydia – keep on spreading some common sense!
