Transient Canvas is a duo that brings clarinetist Amy Advocat together with percussionist Matt Sharrock performing on marimba. In the four years since their formation in 2011, they have premiered over 40 new works, essentially creating an entirely new repertoire for their unique pairing of instruments. The duo is based in Boston; but this past January they performed in the closing concert of the first annual New Music Gathering, held at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Next month Transient Canvas will return to San Francisco, performing this time at the Center for New Music (C4NM). They will be the recitalists for the second concert curated by Danny Clay in his don’t be a stranger series. Their program will include the world premiere of “The Private Works of Puncher & Wattmann,” written by San Francisco composer Joseph Colombo. Those who know their Samuel Beckett (at least in English) will probably take little time in associating Colombo’s title with Waiting for Godot. Other new works to be included on their bicoastal program will be by David Coll, Brenna Noonan, Beau Kenyon, Adam Roberts, and Andy Vores.
Clay has planned his don’t be a stranger series to provide a platform for (in his words) “amazing folks to share the weird and wonderful things they’re doing for the world of music, both in the Bay Area and beyond.” The Bay Area was represented last Friday by a duo recital by local pianists Kate Campbell and Anne Rainwater, at which they performed an “immersive collaboration piece” that Clay composed. For the second installment in his series, Clay is shifting attention from the Bay Area to “beyond.”
Transient Canvas’ commitment to spreading their repertoire has led to performing in a variety of unconventional venues. In the Boston area they have contributed to the Original Gravity Concert Series, which is held at the Aeronaut Brewing Company (shown in the above photograph) in Somerville and provides “pairings” of local composers with local beers. They have also performed at the Firehouse New Music Series in Brooklyn and the Goat Farm Arts Center in Atlanta.
Their C4NM concert will take place on Saturday, August 15. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. General admission will be $15 with a $10 rate for C4NM members. Tickets will be available only at the door. C4NM is located at 55 Taylor Street, about half a block north of where Golden Gate Avenue meets Market Street. The information line for C4NM is 415-275-2466 (C4NM).
