The Colorado Avalanche are now 2-4 with 3 of these losses coming on home ice at the Pepsi Center. On Wednesday night, they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes by a score of 1-0 in overtime.
The Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward had a total of 26 say and Colorado Avalanche Semyon Varlamov had 18 saves.
The Colorado Avalanche has won 10 consecutive games against the Carolina Hurricanes at home and in the past 12 games, the Avalanche have had 10 wins and 2 ties. The last lost to the Hurricanes came when the Avalanche played at the McNichols Sports Arena on February 9, 1996. Back then the Hurricanes were known as the Hartford Whalers.
The first period saw a lot of penalties against both teams. At the 1:16 mark, Avalanche’s Gabriel Landeskog was called for interference against Kris Versteeg. Then just 32 seconds later, Hurricane’s Ryan Murphy was called for slashing against John Mitchell. Later at the 5:23 mark, Avalanche’s Carl Soderberg was caught with a tripping penalty against Andrej Nestrasil. Brock McGinn was called at the 10:44 mark with a charging against Erik Johnson of the Avalanche. Exactly 5 minutes later, Michael Jordan for the Hurricanes was called for holding against Nathan MacKinnon. Hurricanes were caught at the 18:44 mark for hooking against Mikhail Grigorenko. Both goalies held tough in the power plays for the first period as the period ended scoreless.
The second period played out like the first, shots on goal but both period and both goalies, Varlamov and Ward held their own as the Avalanche were called for two penalties in the second period. John Mitchell for slashing and Francois Beauchemin for cross checking.
Varlamov made a glove save against Kris Versteeg on a breakaway with 36 seconds left in the second period to keep the game scoreless. Former Colorado Avalanche player and now defenseman for the Hurricanes, John-Michael Liles did have to leave the game at the 14:41 mark in the second period as he and Avalanche’s Iginla collided in the corner and was cut from Iginla’s skate. Liles did return in the third period however.
Only 46 seconds into the third period saw the Carolina Hurricanes have a golden opportunity to possibly put the game away as Blake Comeau of the Avalanche was called for boarding against Eric Stall. This was the fifth power play for the Hurricanes and they had two shots on goal, of which neither would see the net. Semyon Varlamov made two great saves.
Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward did make an amazing save as Matt Duchene had a chance at a breakaway open net. Ward raised his stick blade at the last second to knock Duchene’s shot away.
In the overtime, Hurricane’s Victor Rask scored at the 1:49 mark to give the Caroline Hurricanes a 1-0 victory against the Colorado Avalanche.
The Colorado Avalanche host the Columbia Blue Jackets next at the Pepsi Center on Saturday, October 24th at 7:00 PM. The Blue Jackets are still looking for their first win in the regular season.
