The AMC Channel launched its spin-off from its “The Walking Dead” franchise on August 23, 2015 to the tune of 10.1 million viewers. The “Fear the Walking Dead” premiere surpassed its progenitor in premiere numbers by a large margin. When “The Walking Dead” first hit the screen on October 31, 2010 it garnered 5.3 million viewers which was a record then and now the progeny of the franchise has risen to the #1 series premiere in cable history. However, their premiere success very likely has to do with riding the coat tails of “The Walking Dead” a cable success standing firmly on its own legs, so will the numbers hold week after week, time will tell.
The premise of this new series allows for viewers to witness the beginnings of the proverbial @#&! hitting the fan and it focuses on the plight of a family. The universe will most likely expand as new characters make their entrances. The opening sequence of the show introduces the viewer to the first ‘walker’ a girl named Gloria. Oh, Gloria we hardly knew ya! However, the viewer doesn’t have much information on how she became a ‘walker’ — did she overdose or is the knife sticking out of her chest the reason?
It will be interesting to see how the zombie virus escalates and to see the fall of society. The viewers are given a rare glimpse into the infancy of a world now filled with ‘the walking dead’. Fans of the original, “The Walking Dead” have never fully been provided a look into the early days of the ‘outbreak’ before everything went up in smoke. In fact, “The Walking Dead” viewer intro in the new zombie world is seen through Rick Grimes when he wakes from a coma to a world lost in a landscape of flesh hungry dead. Now, with the launch of “Fear the Walking Dead” viewers can look forward to seeing the progression of society’s fall, military action toward the dead and maybe some light shed on the shadows that were created in the first season of “The Walking Dead”.
Yes, this franchise is a zombie romp, but one thing became very clear when the first episode of “The Walking Dead” aired on the AMC channel in 2010, that it is a character driven drama that happens to have zombies. The set-up of the new series, “Fear the Walking Dead” appears to have the same set-up and with the pilot episode under its belt, we shall see how it develops as the season progresses.
The pilot episode offers up tension and maybe even a little nervous anxiety for the viewer albeit a little slow in spots. So, hopefully, the 90 minute pilot plodded in spots to cover ground and will be quicker paced throughout the next episodes and the rest of the season as we get to know the characters further. The next episode airs, Sunday, August 30, 2015 at 9 p.m. (EST).
Side Note: For everyone counting the days until season 5 of “The Walking Dead” premieres, mark your calendars for October 11, 2015!
