For some Americans Thanksgiving is still that special holiday where they can stay at home and celebrate with family and friends; however, for others it is just another day of work, especially for those who work in retail. In fact, on Thanksgiving they will have to work even harder than on other days due to the crowds that come into the doors of department stores shopping for the holidays. Why would Americans want to shop on Thanksgiving when there are so many other days to shop for the holiday season including the traditional Black Friday?
As a society, some of us have simply lost family values. Thanksgiving is a part of our American heritage, and we should observe that day, not only to give others the chance to celebrate with their families but also to spend some quality time with our families as well. In a whole year, you will forget many days, but the holidays are simply hard to forget. Young children will have happy memories of parents who spend Thanksgiving with them, and they will last a lifetime.
When the pilgrims and the Indians celebrated the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Massachusetts in 1621, they all gathered together in harmony to eat a feast outside. Their message was one of unity, family, friendship and thankfulness. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official holiday.
Even though the story of Thanksgiving may inspire us, some of us may still be tempted to shop on Thanksgiving. Most of us have many excuses. Some of us believe that our families will be bored staying inside the home for an entire day. There are many activities that the entire clan can enjoy, no matter their age, such as making crafts, playing board games, watching television and watching movies- – just to name a few examples.
While some people love to cook on Thanksgiving, others do not. Even if you do not enjoy cooking, you can still have a family dinner at home by buying the cooked food the day before Thanksgiving. Now all you have to do is heat the food on Thanksgiving. Your family will appreciate having their meal at home.
Despite the fact that Thanksgiving is a family holiday, some of us may feel tension at a table surrounded by relatives that we may not get along well with. This may be another reason why we may want to avoid Thanksgiving dinner. There are many movies that have tackled this issue of family friction during the holidays such as the fine drama, “Pieces of April.” Since this is a day when we should think about others rather than thinking about ourselves, we should avoid arguments at the dinner table. We must follow the example of the pilgrims and the Indians and put aside all of our differences at least just for one day.
