Six people are dead in east Texas after a man, for reasons yet to be determined, killed them while they were camping, authorities are saying. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deaths and have taken 33-year-old William Hudson into custody after two bodies were found in a travel trailer Sunday and four more bodies were found Monday submerged in a pond — all on property next to land owned by Hudson.
USA Today reported November 16 that William Hudson was arrested in connection with the killing of five adults, four men and a woman, and a 6-year-old boy on a campsite on property bordering his own near Tennessee Colony, Texas. The six were staying in a travel trailer owned by one of the victims. Police found it parked on adjoining property to Hudson’s that had been purchased by the female victim’s boyfriend.
According to KYTX in Nacogdoches, the victims were all members of two families. Thomas Kade, who owned the property on which the trailer set, was killed along with his two sons. Carl Johnson and Kade’s girlfriend, Hannah Johnson, father and daughter, were the first two found. Hannah’s 6-year-old son was the sixth victim.
One individual, Cynthia Johnson, the wife of Carl and mother to Hannah, survived the mass killings. According to what family members of those killed told the Franklin Sun Journal, she was able to make her way to the main road off the property and call 911 on Sunday. Two of the victims, Carl and Hannah, were subsequently found in the trailer when Anderson County authorities arrived on the scene.
According to the Palestine Herald, the woman was found injured alongside the road. She reported the incident as a shooting.
Sheriff Greg Taylor said that the crime scene “spans from the area of the travel trailer to a residence that is west of there, and another residence west of there.” He explained that the residences were connected by a single road. The killings are believed to have occurred on Saturday and although the killings are “possible shootings,” he maintained that it remained unclear, pending autopsies, how the four victims found in the pond died.
William Hudson was arrested at his mother’s residence. He has been charged with one count of murder, but Taylor said that more charges are likely to follow. He is being held on a $2.5 million bond.
Investigators believe Hudson acted alone. A motive for the killings is as yet unknown.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the incident at Tennessee Colony, Texas, should it prove to be a mass shooting incident, would bring the total of mass shootings in the United States this year to 292. A “mass shooting” is considered such when there or four or more victims.
