As reported by Forbes Magazine early on September 30, 2015, Tesla Motors has officially launched its SUV, the Model X. According to Forbes contributor Brooke Crothers, the Model X demonstrates both pizzazz and practicality.
Looking at the Model X, a few key features will immediately stand out. The first of which are the Falcon Wing rear doors and auto-sensing front doors. The Falcon Wing doors allow you to park in very tight spaces with just one foot of clearance on both sides while still being able to open the doors. The doors are also able to calculate the height of a garage ceiling so as to avoid opening the doors too high and causing damage to the vehicle. The Falcon Wings additionally allow for fairly easy access to the Model X’s third row of seats. With regards to the auto-sensing front doors, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk described them as an invisible chauffeur. These doors can triangulate a person’s position, detect that they are moving towards the front door and then open the front door. Once the driver (or passenger) takes a seat, the doors will close automatically.
For Musk, it is important to show that any type of car has the ability to go electric. At the start of a presentation in Fremont, California, Musk said, “We showed that you can make a compelling sports car with the Roadster…and we showed that you can do it with a sedan, and now we’re going to show that you can do it with an SUV.”
As far as safety is concerned, a five-star rating isn’t good enough according Musk. Musk said that the Model X should get a sixth star because the Model X has a six and one-half percent of injury. A vehicle needs to have a ten percent chance on an injury in order to earn five stars. The Model X also has a feature called Active Safety, which continually scans the road with a camera, radar and a sonar system to enable the Model X to apply brake pressure before there’s an accident. Many cars do this already, but the Model X will also use an ultrasonic around the side of the car to help steer you away from a side collision.
Concerning performance, a Model X P90D version with Ludicrous Mode can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and has a top of speed of 155 mph. Additionally, it is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds while carrying seven people. How long can she go? The Model X has a top range of 257 miles.
Pricewise, the top-of-the-line Signature Series starts at $132,000 whereas the entry level can be seen at around $75,000.
According to Reuters, there have been an estimated 25,000 pre-orders for the crossover and if one places an order now, they will have theirs in about 8-12 months.
