Cosmetics genius, Terry de Gunzburg has been called the “Steve Jobs” of the cosmetic world and is renowned for her creation of the cult-status highlighting pen, Touche Éclat by Yves Saint Laurent. (One Touche Éclat is sold every 10 seconds!)
Terry accidentally discovered the excitement of the color cosmetics world one summer while she was attending medical school. In an effort to “rebel” against her father, Terry signed up for a beauty class at the famous Carita salon in Paris which led to her budding career as a makeup artist in 1975. Terry’s artistry work was very unique, a sophisticated, perfect nude look: Perfect sheer foundation, perfect lashes and eyebrows, clean eyelid defined lips in natural looking shades. Terry’s gift for creating beautiful complexions created a high demand for her services as a professional makeup artist.
While working as a studio artist for the Carita salon, Terry was given a makeup assignment as lead for the Haute-Couture issue of Vogue magazine. This assignment paved the way for Terry to join the luxury brand, Yves Saint Laurent in 1985 as international makeup designer in charge of developing makeup for the brand’s haute couture shows. Terry was responsible for the creation of every seasonal look and the makeup for all the photo shoots and commercial films. She credits Yves Saint Laurent for teaching her the secrets of color.
Terry’s trademark look has been dubbed, “Terry style”. A look that reflects perfect skin, perfect radiance in lieu of a matte, full coverage finish. Softly defined lips, eyes that are subtly lined to contour the eye and lots of mascara. The art of perfectly shaped eye brows complete this softly contoured look that gives structure to the face without obvious color.
In 1998, Terry launched the By Terry cosmetics line which has become one of the bestselling premium cosmetic lines on the market today. Two years later, Terry felt the desire to create a couture house for color cosmetics and in 2000 she opened the very first By Terry Haute Couleur boutique in Paris’s Galerie Véro-Dodat.
Terry wanted to create a high scale product and service that would cater to women that desired a very specific color and specific texture. She worked with three chemists to create her product line approaching the formulation process much in the same way that the haute couture process evolves. The process included taking measurements of skin color and texture then presenting the perfect samples of what she was trying to achieve; the perfect foundation, the perfect powder. Luxury products that reflect perfection with regard to texture, feeling and ingredients.
The refined texture on the skin is attributed to the ingredients that are used in the By Terry formulas – an equal level of skin care and extremely rare, pure expensive pigments mixed with enlightening pigments and no color. This process is a “homemade” secret, an ability to mix enlightening pigments with no color with colorful pigments to get this “dewy, matte” finish.
Working as cosmeceutical grade skincare, the By Terry products and patented formula help the skin to recover its own strength with a real body building of collagen and elastin in the deepest layer of skin. Ingredients and products that really transform, not only the quality and the strength of the skin but also the luminosity. It has a power to transform every skin from shadow to light without any color.
Terry believes that preparation of the skin before application of makeup is absolutely critical. First the face must be clean, in fact, she likes to clean the face five minutes before applying makeup and follow with a lot of moisturizer. Allow the moisturizer to infuse the skin, like a mask for a few minutes then work the moisturizer into the skin with her foundation brush. Terry believes that this process massages the skin, emphasizes the oxygenation of each epidermal layer which prepares the skin to receive color cosmetics much better and make the makeup application last longer.
By Terry products are sold online at beauty.com, Barneys.com and locally at The Cosmetic Market Avalon located in Alpharetta, GA.
