Taye Diggs is not just another pretty face! The “Private Practice” and “Murder in the First” star is getting glammed up and glittery for his role in the upcoming Broadway revival “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” On Wednesday, People shared the first photo of Diggs in full makeup for the role of the show’s colorful title character. The stunning image comes from photographer Sebastian Mader. Diggs described his role as the gender-bending German glam rocker as “the role of a lifetime,” and dished that he even likes wearing nail polish.
Diggs will play transgender singer Hedwig in the revival of the Tony Award winning musical for a limited 12-week engagement starting July 22 at the Belasco Theatre in New York, but it’s far from the actor’s first foray on Broadway. Diggs previously appeared in the Broadway productions of “Wicked,” “Rent” and “Chicago,” and his last New York stage role was in the 2005 revival of “A Soldier’s Play.” While Diggs has focused mostly on TV roles over the past decade, he’s the whole package with years of acting, singing and dancing experience on his Broadway resume.
Even when he’s not performing on stage, Diggs has always been a Broadway buff. Earlier this year he told Examiner that he enjoys taking his five-year-old son, Walker, to the theater. “Theater is always fun, whether or not he digs it, I always love the actual activity,” Diggs said in February.
Last year, the cult favorite, off-Broadway 1998 hit “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” hit Broadway for a revival with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role. In a statement posted on Broadway.com, the “How I Met Your Mother” actor said: “I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig’s high heels.” Harris ultimately won the 2014 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. While fans are wondering if Taye Diggs can fill his shoes, based on this first photo it looks like Diggs was born to play this role.
