It is time to put my ol’ beer reviewing hat on again, and today we will be taking a look at Whirlwind Witbier from Victory Brewing Company (Downingtown, Pennsylvania).
A few weeks ago, I reported on the Variety of Victorys Summer Selections mixed 12-pack that Victory Brewing recently released for all of your warm weather drinking needs. If you remember correctly, Whirlwind Witbier is a revived Victory brew that is found exclusively in that seasonal variety pack. Well, the fine folks at Victory provided me with a bottle to enjoy . . . and enjoy I will in this week’s segment of Tasting Notes.
Tasting Notes – Whirlwind Witbier from Victory Brewing Company
Appearance: Whirlwind Witbier hits the glass with a vibrant lemon yellow body. The color is dulled a touch by the style’s signature hazy cloudiness. The pour yields just short of two fingers of bright white foam that has moderate retention. The head eventually falls to a thin ring that leaves wisps of lace to notch the glass throughout the experience. Looks fantastic for the style.
Aroma: Bready wheat notes hit the nose first with coriander and clove joining the party shortly thereafter. A lovely earthiness mellows it out a bit, and then a touch of banana and faint citrus zest wrap things up in the background.
Taste: Wheat once again leads the way for Whirlwind, but a good amount of citrus quickly takes a firm hold on the flavor. A very nice, sweet Meyer lemon-like note dominates, and it works wonderfully with the supporting notes of banana, clove, orange zest, pepper and coriander. Earthy yeast and grassy hops round off the flavor profile.
Mouthfeel: A light to medium feel with a medium carbonation level allows this beer to somehow be both crisp and slightly creamy at times (weird, I know, but in a good way). This beer is quite refreshing and easy drinking with zero hint of alcohol to be found. Whirlwind finishes dry with just some Belgian yeast qualities gracing the aftertaste.
Final Thoughts: Whirlwind Witbier easily hits all of the marks you would expect from a Belgian Wit. Crisp and refreshing, this beer boasts plenty of flavor while remaining quaffable enough to enjoy several pours on a hot summer’s day. This brew is not over the top or at all an extreme take on the style, but it still remains unique with that delightful Meyer lemon-like character and balancing hop presence. If you have been looking for an incredibly solid, no frills Wit to sip on this summer, look no further than Whirlwind Witbier.
