Tarek El Moussa has been dealing with thyroid cancer for the last three years. A viewer of Moussa’s “Flip or Flop” reality show actually tipped Moussa off to the fact that he had a lump on his neck. After further investigation, Moussa discovered he did, in fact, have cancer.
People Magazine reported on Sunday that Tarek El Moussa is now recovering from cancer treatment. Moussa’s thyroid cancer is reportedly in remission after radioactive iodine therapy. But, according to Moussa, he just doesn’t have the energy he used to have.
The only thing is most days or like half the time I feel a little jetlagged. I’m really tired.
A biopsy in 2013 revealed that Tarek El Moussa had thyroid cancer after a fan, who just happened to be a registered nurse, emailed “Flip or Flop” producers saying she noticed a lump on Moussa’s neck.
“This is not a joke. I’m a registered nurse. I’ve been watching ‘Flip or Flop.’ I noticed that the host Tarek has a large nodule on his thyroid, and he needs to have it checked out,” said the email from nurse Ryan Read.
Tarek El Moussa was first mistakenly told that the lump was benign, but Moussa later found out that his thyroid cancer had already progressed to his lymph nodes. Moussa was immediately scheduled for surgery to remove the lump and is now said to be cancer-free, although, he does acknowledge the fact that his cancer could return.
There is always that chance of reoccurrence but every year that goes by the odds of reoccurrence goes down so it’s good.
The co-host of HGTV’s “Flip or Flop” series says he’s slowed down quite a bit since his grueling ordeal with thyroid cancer, saying he can “actually relax now,” even though he’s still a busy real estate agent in Orange County, California. Tarek El Moussa, 34, along with his wife Christina El Moussa, 32, run the El Moussa Group real estate agency.
Tarek also began co-hosting “Flip or Flop” alongside Christina in April 2013. “Flip or Flop” follows the couple as they flip houses from start to finish, mostly in California. According to Christina, every episode of “Flip or Flop” shows things that can and do go wrong when house-flipping.
The couple welcomed son Brayden James into the world in August. They already had one daughter, Taylor. If not for the concerned fan, Tarek and Brayden may not even be here. The Independent reported that Tarek had previously been told by a doctor that the large lump at the base of his neck was nothing. Tarek El Moussa admitted that the last three years have certainly been challenging.
Ryan Read from Texas met Tarek El Moussa in person on an episode of “The Doctors” in 2013. According to Read, she was watching a marathon of “Flip or Flop” and noticed the lump half-way through, saying a gut feeling told her there was definitely something there, and she knew she had to somehow get that message to Tarek as soon as possible.
