It has been a few years since we saw a new iteration in the Bioshock series, with the last one being the critically acclaimed Bioshock Infinite. 2K and Take-Two seem to be planning for a future with the popular franchise, however, gamers have yet to hear anything on what is officially happening with it.
Take-Two Interactive holds both Rockstar Games and 2K Games, and these two publishers work on some of the gaming industry’s biggest IP. Chief Executive Officer of Take-Two Interactive Strauss Zelnick talked about the future of the Bioshock series and how the firm views the brand.
“[Bioshock] is in the hands of the 2K group and they’ll make announcements in due time about any upcoming releases, but Bioshock is unquestionably a permanent franchise for our company and one that we do believe in,” Zelnick said at the MKM Partners Conference.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to hear an announcement of a new Bioshock in the coming months, perhaps sometime during 2016, and the same can be said for hearing more about the next Borderlands. New iterations in either franchise are ultimately expected in the future, though it’s been difficult to get a read on when they will arrive.
Around Gamescom 2015, 2K and Hangar 13 announced Mafia III, which will release sometime during 2016. From what we’ve seen, the game looks fantastic and it could be one of the best open-world games we see in 2016. Zelnick spoke about changing studios for Mafia III and how they feel the game is looking now.
“A lot of the people who were working on it at 2K Czech are still working on the title. We did create Hangar 13 because we had the opportunity to do so with Haden Blackman and apply all of the 2K resources to it. That decision was a reflection of our belief that there was enormous upside in the franchise and we wanted to make a phenomenal game and we thought that was the best way to do it.
“No disrespect intended to our colleagues in Czech, it was time to look at doing it a different way to make sure we had the right sensibility, the right gameplay and the development was as good as it could be. So far so good, it feels really good,” Zelnick said.
atombash.com was able to find out quite a lot regarding Mafia III in a series of exclusives over the past month or two. Mafia III is looking like it could be a breakout title, so it’ll be interesting to see when the game ultimately releases.
