Choosing a bridal shower gift is an important task. Amidst weeks or months of stressful wedding planning, the bridal shower is the one day that the bride-to-be can pause and really take in the changes that are about to happen in her life and celebrate with the friends and family that have been her life’s foundation. Though the celebration is the most important part of the day, the gifts the bride receives will enable her to better plan for her post-wedding needs and they will also become a treasured memory of her special day.
In the past, gifts have ranged from sexy lingerie to fine china, but there are several ways to step outside the box and give the bride a gift she will chuckle at or cherish. Any of these ideas can be dressed up with some artistic talent or creative packaging, but at their heart, they are great gift choices for the bride-to-be.
Wedding advent calendar
Every bride is counting down the days until her wedding, so why not make the days pass with a little more excitement? Choose a number of days, such as 20 days out from the big day and make or purchase the same number of small gifts. These could include Chapstick, nail polish, a pretty necklace, body spray, a small picture frame–or anything to brighten the bride-to-be’s day. Then, wrap these gifts in colorful envelopes, small folding boxes or miniature gift bags. Number the outside of the wrappers and attach them to a bulletin board or a wide swath of ribbon with hanging hook. An advent calendar can also be made from a sectioned crate, round boxes stacked on a cupcake stand, or small jars lined up on a spice rack.
As wedding planning whirs by so quickly, it’s easy for a bride to get lost in the details and forget to take a few moments for herself, just to enjoy being in love. A bridal journal gives her the opportunity to jot down her thoughts during a precious time in her life. The gift can be a store-bought blank journal or specially crafted to give ideas such as “Where we met,” “My first thought when he proposed,” and “What I’m most looking forward to in becoming his wife.”
All brides want to feel beautiful on their wedding day and a spa package can be just the gift to help her achieve that confidence. Of course, with the stress of bringing so many details together for a flawless wedding day, some brides-to-be could use a little pampering before the big day as well. A facial, pedicure and massage can go a long way toward helping her relax and feel her best during this busy time in her life.
First Christmas ornament
Even if a wedding is taking place in the spring or summer, there’s something about a First Christmas Together ornament that makes a bride feel like she’s putting down roots and starting her own traditions. Each year, when she hangs that special ornament she received as a bridal gift, she’ll be taken back through a flood of happy memories of falling in love. Ornaments can be cutesy, dough figures or something lacy and delicate, but the fact that they are personalized with the bride and groom’s names and wedding date will make them special keepsakes throughout their marriage.
Gift basket kitchen utensils and recipes
Many new brides want to impress their husbands with hearty, delicious meals. Add a twist to a gift basket full of kitchen utensils by tying a recipe card or two to each one. The bride will enjoy discovering new recipe ideas along with her new kitchen gadgets.
Falling in love on Facebook album
If the bride-to-be has shared her relationship and engagement news via Facebook, printing her Facebook posts from the time she first met her groom and arranging them in a special scrapbook, makes a wonderful gift. Include photos and comments from friends and she’ll have an instant walk down memory lane any time she’s feeling nostalgic.
Honeymoon helpers basket
Once the big day has passed, the happy couple won’t be able to wait to whisk away to their honeymoon. Fill a to-go basket that includes sunglasses and sunscreen, his and hers flip flops, wine glasses and chocolates, crackers and cheese, fragrant body spray and cologne, a silky robe and boxers, and a romantic songs cd or digital playlist.
Newly married couples quickly find that compromise is an important part of keeping their relationship healthy and happy. Give the bride a good laugh with a basket full of “compromises.” For the age-old go out versus stay in battle, include movie tickets and a popular movie on DVD or Blu-Ray. For the spend versus save conversation, include a piggy bank and a Visa gift card. For the “where to vacation” debate include flip flops and winter gloves or fishing lures and a good novel. Add more to the basket with gifts that represent opposites such as “in the mood” versus “not in the mood,” salty versus sweet, romantic versus action movies, and so on.
Date night dish
Visit a craft supplies shop and purchase a large bag of wooden hearts. Whether painted or unpainted, on each heart, use a Sharpie to write in date night ideas. Stack the hearts inside of a nice, crystal bowl and serve up a dish full of ideas that will keep the bride and groom’s relationship fresh and fun.
Spice Up Your Love Life spice rack
When the honeymoon is over and both bride and groom head back to work, settling back into the “real world” can threaten to drain all the heat right out of the bedroom. Create a Spice Up Your Love Life spice rack, where bride or groom can go for flirty–or dirty ideas. The spice rack can contain actual spices if desired. In this case, ideas would be written on paper and tied to the bottles. Otherwise, empty jars can be used and one–or several strips of paper–with ideas can be placed inside of each one.
Whether the gift chosen is sweet, sexy, or sentimental, the bride-to-be will surely look back on her bridal shower with fond memories for years to come.
