Just this past weekend, this writer traveled to the Midwestern United States to see a friend graduate from college (woo-hoo, congratulations grad!). Although the trip was fantastic and allowed for some awesome bonding, it really didn’t allow for a great deal of time for healthy eating or exercise. All of the fantasies of Midwestern-style foods—Cincinnati-style chili, Jimmy John’s, deep-dish pizza—may appear delicious upon first glance but, like a donut, often leaves a bad after-taste.
It seems that travel more often than not causes us to follow the “YOLO” mentality of try everything you can now and don’t worry about the after-effects, which often leads to yo-yo dieting upon return home. So, how can we break free of this seemingly never-ending cycle? Perhaps we can choose travel excursions that incorporate for focus primarily on exercise, health and wellness—sounds like fun after sitting in your cubicle for 40 to 50 hours a week, right? Check out some of our picks below!
Jimmy LeSage’s New Life Hiking Spa
Located in the Green Mountains of Vermont, the nationally recognized affordable destination spa offers packages that allow you to both relax and shed off those extra pounds. The shortest stay, ranging from two to four days, costs only $245 (per person, per night) for a double occupancy; the longest stay can be 11 days or longer for a price of $225 (per person, per night) for a double occupancy stay. Each individual is guaranteed through their vacation package many amenities, including gourmet meals and snacks, massages and facials, and a variety of exercise classes. In their 38 years, the spa has assisted its visitors in losing weight through its New Life Diet (which is also available as an ebook for those who are unable to make the trek to Vermont). Check out when you can visit the New Life Hiking Spa here, and make sure to snatch up their seasonal discounts until Sept. 15!).
Run in Paris with a Marathon Runner
If you’re planning on visiting the City of Light anytime soon and want to work off all of those baguettes, macaroons, and crepes, why not discover the beautiful city while enjoying a nice run? For a mere hour and 35 euros, you’ll be able to see the sights of the city through the eyes of a local marathon runner. Personally, running sounds like a pain in the side—but just think, even if you aren’t a runner, jogging past Notre Dame or the Louvre will make you feel more like a Parisian than when you walk around with that fanny pack and guidebook. Plus, after an hour-long run, who’s to say you can’t celebrate with a chocolate croissant?
Bicycle Adventures Big Sur Bike Tour
For those who love to put the pedal to the metal without spending a ton on gas, bicycling your way to fun and relaxation takes only seven days with Bicycle Adventures’ trip plans. As many people around the world know, Big Sur is one of the most gorgeous places to visit in California; however, in order to visit, you often have to drive (which may include loads of junk food and obviously hours of sitting). One of the priciest trips on this list, at $3595 per person for the seven days, the trip includes rides to Solvang, Harmony, and Jalama Beach, along with a tour of Hearst Castle and wine tasting tours. If you’re interested in a bike tour through Bicycle Adventures but don’t think the Big Sur trip is for you, check out their other trips here.
The Yoga Getaway
Have you ever wanted to visit Machu Picchu, or Santorini? Have you ever dreamed of perfecting your warrior pose in either of these locations? If the answer is yes, it would definitely behoove you to visit The Yoga Getaway’s website and see where you can roll out your mat. Currently, the organization has a retreat set for June 7th through June 13th in the heart of Oia village on Santorini in Greece (and is, unfortunately, completely sold out). However, if you check out their website, you’ll get a sense of what’s included in your yoga getaway package: all meals, boat tours of the islands, wine tasting, and airport transfers. Just like with yoga, there shouldn’t be any stress on your yoga getaway—so don’t allow there to be! Make sure to check back with the organization’s website for future trips, or search around for more yoga-centric vacations around the world.
Indulge all your fitness fun at Miraval Arizona Resort and Spa
If you’re into a more domestic vacation (both for your wallet and sanity), there’s another popular locale for you to test this summer, already applauded by everyone from John Kerry to Oprah herself. The Miraval Resort in Catalina, Arizona, just outside of Tucson, offers a wide range of packages for its visitors, ranging from just a simple, sitting-by-the-pool style vacation to a high-intensity, get-fit bonanza. Daily activities include moving and shaking from the early morning to the evening, with morning stretching, nutrition classes, spin classes, and skin care to give you the opportunity to live the healthiest version of yourself. When you’re done sweating out your demons, you can relax by the pool, visit one or more of the resort’s five eateries, and get a body scrub. Truly, you won’t want to leave and head back to the real world when they’re done with you!
