Yoga, Crossfit, Zumba, pilates… there are numerous different types of workout sessions available to those who want to get their sweat one, with each having a different goal in mind. New to the scene, Orangetheory Fitness has taken the country by storm with a unique approach to high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
Boasting 60 minute workouts, the studio balances a mix of cardio and strength training to get participants sweating and their heart pumping. Time is spent between the treadmill, water rowing machines and in the weight room, which features free weights and TRX systems.
Throughout the workout, participants wear a heart-rate monitor and can view their heart rate on large screens scattered throughout the room. The fitness class emphasizes the importance of staying within the fat-burning zone, or the green zone, as well as hitting the orange and red zones, to truly push the body and muscles. Instead of focusing on going harder or faster, instructors will encourage participants to find the pace that keeps them in the fat-burning zone, as well as the orange zone, which helps to promote the after-burn, or faster calorie burn post workout.
Typically, one instructor leads the classes and participants are split among the treadmills, rowing machines and weight rooms. As time allows, the instructor provides one-on-one attention to ensure that each participant is doing the exercise appropriately, as well as guiding people to push just a little bit harder.
Classes vary each session and typically focus on building endurance, strength or power. That’s not to say that strength classes won’t have treadmill work, or endurance classes won’t have time on the weights, but it will vary the intensity and goals for each exercise.
