A large crowd packed the Estadio Azteca Soccer Stadium Saturday night to watch the Sacramento Surge host the Tacoma Stars. After losing their first three matches on the road, the Surge were looking to turn things around with a victory in front of their die hard fans. The Stars have won their first two matches (including a 5-1 win on November 6th against Sacramento) and are looking to go 3-0. The goalie for the match are Chris Welch for the Surge and Danny Waltman for Tacoma.
The Stars opened up the game with a flash goal from defender Adam West, giving them a 1-0 lead. Tacoma scored their second goal of the match thanks to a kick from Dan Antoniuk in the waning minutes of the first period to go up 2-0. They would get a third goal in the early part of the second period from Dan Antoniuk off of a power play to take a 3-0 advantage. Sacramento would get on the scoreboard with a blast from Norman Levesque, cutting the lead to 3-1 but Tacoma’s Derek Johnson snuck a shot past the arms of Chris Welch to go into the locker rooms at halftime with a 4-1 lead.
Sacramento took to the artificial pitch in the third period with a renewed vigor as they attacked the Stars goal but their goalie Danny Waltman withstood a barrage of shots from all directions. Defender Norman Levesque recorded his second goal of the night with a power shot that soared past Waltman making it a 4-2 match. Niko Brioso continued the Surge rally with a goal thirty seconds later cutting the lead to 4-3 as the crowd went wild inside the Estadio Azteca. But Tacoma quieted the rabid Surge fans with two more goals to end the third period up 6-3.
Despite being down by three goals, the Surge continued to play tough and managed to rally the troops and score again in the fourth period when Anibal Echeverria scored in the opening minutes to shorten the lead to 6-4. Jamal Cox kicked in his second goal of the night giving Tacoma a commanding 7-4 advantage in the waning minutes of the match. Surge’s head coach Mark Bickham pulled Chris Welch to add a sixth striker to add some offensive firepower but the Stars took advantage of it and scored again to go up 8-4. Sacramento would score their final goal of the night off the foot of Mike Tobie but the Stars punched in another goal past the sixth striker Niko Brioso ending the match with a 9-5 victory on the road.
The Sacramento Surge will host the Tacoma Stars again for a Sunday matinee at the Estadio Azteca with kickoff scheduled for 3:05 P.M. Fans wanting to attend the match can do so by visiting the club’s official website or they can watch via Go Live Sports Cast.
