When Oprah Winfrey walked onto the stage to welcome more than 1000 attendees to the first Super Soul Sessions live event at UCLA, the crowd went wild. We all stood, cheered, and pointed smartphone cameras toward the stage in an attempt to capture a moment with Oprah.
Augmenting the inspirational and thought provoking conversations aired on Super Soul Sunday on OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network), the Super Soul Sessions live event echoed Ms. Winfrey’s intent, “…to create a gathering of spiritual thought leaders, to stimulate and inspire us, to move in a direction of our truest calling – to become more of who we are.”
Stating her hope, “That every word spoken here today, in some way blesses your life,” Ms. Winfrey clarified that this Super Soul Session was not solely about her intention, and led in a moment of silence as we quietly contemplated our own intention for the day.
With a speaker line-up including ten spiritual visoneers there to cultivate an awareness that there is real work to be done within our hearts, each speaker shed light on how we can move closer to our best and highest self.
Here are the highlights and what I learned from each speaker:
Brené Brown: The Anatomy of Trust. “Trust is built in small insignificant moments. These small insignificant moments are “sliding doors” that offer an opportunity for you to choose to build trust with someone, or betray them. The choice is, will you choose to make something important to you that leaves someone else vulnerable?”
Michael Bernard Beckwith: Participate in Your Own Unfolding. “You are made in the image and likeness of God. But what does this really mean? It means you share a faculty with infinite potential. You have the capacity to think beyond your circumstance. Your inner work surrounds your thoughts about your life. This incarnation is your Super Soul Session. You are to participate and not limit the flow of the presence through you.”
Shawn Anchor: The Life Altering Power of a Positive Mind. “Happiness is the joy you feel while moving toward your potential. You can change your genes and environment with a consistent two minutes per day dedicated to sincerely praising or thanking someone else.”
Marianne Williamson: The Spiritual Purpose of Relationships. “Relationships are hospitals of the soul. At any given moment you can be wounded, but you can choose not to act from your wound.”
Tim Storey: The Heart and the Soul of a Comeback. “There are three levels of living: almost, most and utmost. Don’t be stuck in an “almost” life. You don’t want to sit in a setback and settle down. Remember what you were like as a kid when you shouted with vibrancy. Don’t let life knock the “shout” out of you.”
Iyanla Vanzant: You Matter. “What you do matters. How you do it matters. Moment by moment how you speak, how you stand, how you sit matters, because you matter. Stop chasing things that are beneath the truth of who you are.”
Rob Bell: The Joy of Growing Younger. “Outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day-by-day. Let go of toxic ideas of getting older and stopping your participation in life. What about all of your accumulated wisdom? What will you do with that? You experience renewal when you know you are bigger than whatever your current situation presents; you’re reminded of temporariness because you are a spiritual life and the universe buries treasures in each of us.”
Elizabeth Gilbert: The Flight of the Hummingbird: The Curiosity Driven Life. “What is your central truth? Gather accumulated grace, experience and wisdom and look at the landscape of your life. Take the word “passion” off the table and just follow your curiosity. Look at the clues and remember the quote, “The beloved bowed there, knowing you were coming.””
Janet Mock: The Path to Authenticity: Embracing the Otherness. “Owning one’s identity is something everyone faces in his or her own way. There’s a lot of power in saying that I will proudly and unapologetically embrace my identity.”
Deepak Chopra: Belief Creates Reality. “Nobody can change their mind, by trying to change their mind.”
