A little less than a year ago, Mathew Chacko, Music Director at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, announced the formation of the Sunset Music | Arts concert series. The series is now about to celebrate its first anniversary with the launch of its 2015 Summer/Fall Season. With this in mind, the season will begin with a one year anniversary gala concert entitled Favorites from Opera and Broadway!
The program will include arias from operas by Giacomo Meyerbeer (Les Huguenots), Giuseppe Verdi (La Traviata), and Bedřich Smetana (The Bartered Bride). There will also be an aria from Johann Strauss’ operetta Die Fledermaus and three selections from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The Broadway side of the coin will include “Speak Low,” from Kurt Weill’s Lady in the Dark, three selections from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, and two from Lucy Stone’s The Secret Garden. There will also be a performance of “Just for a Thrill” by Lil Hardin Armstrong and Don Raye. The vocalists will be soprano Virginia Pluth, mezzo Sally Munro, tenor Richard Walker, and baritone Frederick Matthews, accompanied at the piano by Ian Robertson.
The performance will take place at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, which is located in the Sunset at 1750 29th Avenue. It will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 9; and there will be a festive reception following the conclusion of the concert. General admission will be $30 with a $25 rate for seniors and students. Tickets may be purchased online through an Eventbrite event page.
Details for the remainder of the 2015 Summer/Fall season have not yet been announced. However, readers may wish to make note of the dates, times, and themes of the remaining concerts in the season:
