Hike in, spend the night and see the fall skies as you have never seen them, with Maine Huts and Trails and Northern Stars Planetarium on September 19.
A perfect place for star gazing
On the 19th of this month Maine Huts and Trails is hosting a program at its Flagstaff Hut that will take advantage of its dark night skies with a presentation on the night sky by John Meader, from Northern Stars Planetarium. Northern Stars presents programs on astronomy and space throughout Maine using portable domes to project the skies.
Maine Huts and Trails is a perfect location for this presentation because the wilderness location of the Flagstaff Hut assures dark skies, totally devoid of ambient light from cities. Using appropriate astronomical instruments, the show will include information on the Moon, constellations, the solar system, space travel and galaxies.
The event includes overnight lodging, all meals and the star gazing presentation at night. It also means that you will have the daylight hours to hike and explore the trails, forests and streams around the Flagstaff Hut and swim and boat in Flagstaff Lake. The Flagstaff facilities include a main lodge with a lounge for relaxing and gathering, a kitchen and dining room and showers and sanitary facilities. Lodging is in separate bunk houses, but limited separate rooms are available. Flagstaff is on the shores of Flagstaff Lake, where there is swimming, canoeing and kayaking with a limited number of boats available. It also has hiking trails around the lake and in the Bigelow range.
