SMT Group (a property of SMT Holding, subsidiary of the SDA-SDAI consortium founded and directed by Philippe de Moerloose) and Kuiken Group BV announced their alliance in June 2015 after SMT Holding finalized the acquisition. This merger looks promising for both companies, which share an ambition to become leaders in their sectors, both in Europe and in Africa.
SMT Group and Kuiken Group unite forces in order to continue growth
Just who are these companies?
SMT Group (Swedish Machinery & Trucks) is an import-export business based in Belgium and is the official distributor of Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Trucks, and Volvo Penta in 26 countries across North Africa, Central Africa, and West Africa. A subsidiary of the SDA-SDAI consortium headed by Belgian entrepreneur Philippe de Moerloose, SMT Group has 22 branches across all of Africa, offering high-quality distribution and customer service.
Based in the Netherlands, Kuiken Group (which includes the companies Kuiken and VCM) is the official distributor in the Benelux countries of Volvo Construction Equipment, Sennebogen cranes and warehouse equipment, Sandwik grinders and Santy port equipment. Their oferring covers multiple growth markets, both in Europe and in Africa. As stated on its website, Kuiken Group has long pursued a multi-brand strategy, gaining distribution rights for the most well-known brands. The company is also recognized for its expertise in customer service and integrated solutions. Today, this alliance between a European company known for its high-end industrial equipment (Kuiken Group) and a fast-growing pan-African company holding the rights to Volvo equipment (SMT Group) should allow for the creation of a formidable company with ambitions of being a leader in high growth markets spread between Europe and Africa (distribution of mining and construction machines, trucks, logistical equipment, infrastructure equipment, etc).
Consolidating For Growth: A new formula for international expansion?
The newly combined company, which will join SMT Group and Kuiken Group BV together under SMT Holding, will represent a network of 27 branches spread across 29 countries in Europe and Africa with more than 750 employees. According to current estimates, the company will reach more than 300 million euros in revenue in 2015. This is a promising outlook, especially for the two leadership teams looking forward to this ambitious alliance.
The CEO of SMT Group, Jérôme Barioz, has publicly stated his optimism about the alliance: “We are convinced that the combination of our dynamism and Kuiken’s industrial experience will allow us to increase customer satisfaction.” In addition, he believes this new company formed from the alliance of the two groups will be a more solid base for future growth: “Sharing best practices and knowledge is our priority. Clients across our different markets will benefit from the added value of our combined expertise and collaboration. Joining forces with Kuiken will allow us to take a big step forward in realizing our global strategy. We are not only increasing our portfolio of products and our network, but also benefitting from the expertise and growth of a leader in the Benelux market.” This analysis is shared by Philippe de Moerloose, CEO of the SDA-SDAI consortium (the parent company of SMT Group), who noted he is particularly proud of the acquisition of Kuiken Group via his Twitter account.
Rob van Hove, CEO of Kuiken Group, also shares this satisfaction. The leader of the Dutch group similarly spoke about his great hopes for the alliance: “SMT Group is a family business with a strong client focus, a long term strategy and a healthy financial situation. Our companies will complement each other without any conflicts of interest. They bring together high-end brands and high-quality services. By joining forces, we’re going to enlarge our product portfolio and share best practices that will benefit our clients and contribute to future growth in our markets in Europe and in Africa.” It’s only a matter of time before this shared and ambitious vision will come to fruition.
