Most political pundits and news commentators claim there was no smoking gun in Hillary Clinton’s 11 hour testimony before the House Select Committee on Benghazi on Thursday. But early on during the testimony the committee had pealed back enough of the layers of contradictory information from the Obama administration to reveal what is perhaps the most crucial smoking gun of all. Clinton, Obama, Susan Rice, and others were not truthful with the American public concerning the nature of the attack.
The smoking gun can be best understood by breaking down the information into a series of smaller factoids that when taken together paint a disturbing picture. The whole thing starts with Hillary’s admission, under oath, that she knew immediately, as it happened, that the attack had nothing to do with an American made video that supposedly insulted Mohammad. The fact that Hillary knew immediately that the attack was perpetrated by al Qaeda type terrorists who had carefully planned their mayhem well in advance is borne out by the fact that she stated she called certain government officials in nearby Mideast countries to inform them that the U.S. consulate in Benghazi had been hit hard in a terrorist attack. She further admitted that she told her family the same thing, even while the attack was still ongoing.
According to Clinton, everyone in the top layers of the administration knew that the attack was al Qaeda inspired terrorism, even as it happened. But this is far from what the American public was told. Hillary herself told the public that the attack had nothing to do with terrorism but a video made in America that depicted Muhammad in derogatory terms. She even told the families of the slain diplomats when their bodies were returned to the United States that, “We will make sure the maker of that video is caught, brought to justice, and jailed.
The false talking points were further solidified by both Barack Obama and Susan Rice. Obama went before the United Nations and blamed the Benghazi attack on the film. Susan Rice appeared on five Sunday news shows to do the same thing.
It is clear, therefore, that top administration officials were using the same talking points when speaking publicly about Benghazi. The problem was that none of it was true, according to intelligence officials on the ground, and at the CIA.
Thus, the question becomes why would the administration go to such great lengths to hide from the public what actually happened in Benghazi. The key issue before the Congressional committee is not only to ascertain the facts of the events leading up to the massacre but to discover the reasons for the coverup. If there was no wrongdoing among Hillary and the top levels of the Obama administration, then there would have been no coverup whatsoever.
But there was, indeed, a coverup, as fully demonstrated by what government officials stated publicly and what they admitted to knowing the night of the attack. The public got one story — the coverup — and administration officials told an entirely different story to their families and foreign heads of state — the truth.
Within two short months after the Benghazi attack Obama faced the 2012 presidential election during which he sought a second term. One of the mainstays of his stump speech was his contention that he had destroyed al Qaeda and that the world was a much safer place. Terrorism, he said, was greatly diminished. Had he been forced to explain Benghazi for what it was — a deadly terrorist attack perpetrated by Muslim extremists — he may have lost the election given that reality did not back up his claims.
Thus, Hillary’s testimony before Congress did not solve her problem. Although diehard fans will defend her to the death no matter what, political insiders, even within the Democratic party, still express deep concern about her vulnerability. She essentially admitted to lying to the public and to the Congressional committee when she stated that immediately as the attack took place in Benghazi she knew it was terrorism perpetrated by Muslim extremists. This is precisely the reason the FBI is investigating Hillary Clinton.
