Summerfest comes to a close on July 5, and Smash Mouth will be there to help close the world’s largest music festival with a bang. Yesterday, in anticipation of the show, lead singer Steve Harwell and bass player Paul Delisle took time from their busy schedule to answer a few questions about touring, their long-term success, and Summerfest.
Emily Carl: How do you find new material and keep things fresh after 20 years as a band?
Smash Mouth: We all write so it’s easy. We no longer have a label giving us crazy deadlines but that may change soon (hint hint).
EC: What do you think it is about your music that makes it so popular throughout the years?
SM: Our songs have always had the ability to appease to kids and their parents at the same time. We created Pop-Rock splendor. Memorable songs that will be here long after we’re not.
EC: You’ve had many chart-topping hits. Do you get a sense when you’re making a song that it will be a hit?
SM: Actually when Greg wrote “All Star” he had to listen to it 50 times before he let anyone listen to it because he wasn’t sure if it was amazing or horrible. At the time we thought “Then The Morning Comes” was stronger but we were wrong.
EC: You’ve also done some covers that have done extremely well. How do you take a classic and turn it into something that’s all your own?
SM: Like any song, you have to be inspired to do it. Something has to spark the creative side. We’ve never done a cover because someone asked us to.
EC: What is your favorite song to perform?
SM: We all have different ones for different times. We’ve performed them so many times it’s tough to pick one. However, a song that never got radio love but always goes over well live is “Getaway Car”. The energy of that song is very uplifting and we always knock it out of the park.
EC: How are you enjoying touring again?
SM: We’ve never stopped performing live. We’ve done official tours the past few years but before that we did a string of 1-off shows. The only difference is living in a bus for months at a time. Performing live is why we do this.
EC: Is this your first time at Summerfest? What are you most looking forward to about this concert?
SM: Shoot, I think it is… so many shows can’t remember. But heck, this fest is crazy amazing. Playing in front of true music lovers- can’t wait!
EC: What can someone expect from their first Smash Mouth concert?
SM: Probably way more energy and harder than anyone would think. We are a true rock band with drum solos etc,.. We don’t hold anything back.
EC: What can we look forward to from Smash Mouth in the future?
SM: New albums, videos and our official biography “Walkin On The Sun” was just released.
The Smash Mouth biography, “Walkin on the Sun” is available on Amazon.com and in book stores such as Barnes & Noble. Smash Mouth headlines Summerfest’s Miller Lite Oasis Stage on Sunday, July 5 at 10 p.m.
