Skyler Shaye is unforgettable. Years after her portrayal of Cloe in “Bratz,” the sizzling Hollywood star is still cherished by her fans for the beloved role. Now, nearly a decade later, with several more films and television shows under her belt, the striking actress is taking on what has been called a “pivotal role” in Showtime’s hit series, “Ray Donovan,” which premieres tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Her character, coincidentally, is slightly more adult than Cloe.
“I play Cindy. Cindy is a hooker,” Skyler revealed brightly. “This season is going to be a great season with a lot of really crazy, exciting things happening!” Shaye’s voice was energetic, warm, and friendly. It also carried just a tantalizing dash of smokey seasoning.
“It is such an honor to be a part of a show like ‘Ray Donovan’ because it’s got great writers and great actors and great producers,” the actress enthused.
Speaking of great, in the episode that airs tonight, Skyler’s character shows up in a number of the scenes dominated by the exquisitely compelling Jon Voight. Voight plays Mickey Donovan, Ray’s brutal, but charismatic father who is not the type of guy you want to have as an adversary.
Though Shaye was obviously unable to divulge details about the upcoming season, she did promise that there were a lot of surprising developments in store for each character this year. “The show is so badass,” she expressed with devilish delight, “but there is also a lot of reality in the sense of what takes place in Hollywood.”
And Skyler should know. She was born and raised in Los Angeles. “My mother’s side of the family is in the entertainment industry [Bonnie Paul is both a country singer and an actress with numerous credits to her name]. I grew up on her side, so entertainment is pretty much all I’ve known.”
As previously noted, one of Shaye’s most recognized roles to date is Cloe, the adorably klutzy character from “Bratz.” “‘Bratz’ had such an impact on my career,” she acknowledged. “I did that movie eight years ago and it’s still relevant! It’s still available on Netflix.” The individuals who discovered (and fell in love with) Skyler back in those mid 2000s are now the teens who comprise the core of her massive and loyal fan base.
Curiously enough, as well-known as Skyler is, she does a good job of keeping her personal life out of the spotlight. A thorough Googling of the celebrity returns mostly tidbits about her work and links to her own social media sites. When Examiner asked if she could offer up some delicious gossip or juicy trivia, Skyler just laughed, “I guess I’m a little bit of a mystery, you’ll just have to keep watching and following along to discover my secrets.”
After a bit of relentless begging, the actress gave in and shared a little about her childhood. “Okay, how about this? I was never a ‘school’ person. I always wanted to be on set, acting. I liked being creative. I remember when I was in second grade, it was almost time to go play in the yard. There was only about 10 minutes left in class and the teacher told us to write down what we each loved the most about our second year of school… and I couldn’t think of anything! So, on this little piece of paper — I still have it — I wrote, ‘What I most loved about second grade was making things like rocks.’” Skyler laughed and explained that making a rock was one of the art projects she had to do that year.
Conversely, when asked about acting and what made it so appealing for her, Skyler was quick to respond. “I love magic! I love fantasy! I love playing dress up — or dress down if you happen to be referring to my character in ‘Ray Donovan,’” she joked, displaying that vibrant sparkle of wit that makes her so enchanting. “I find it interesting to become somebody else, to find out what really makes another person, the person that they are.”
Skyler Shaye makes her debut on tonight’s season premiere of Showtime’s “Ray Donovan” (9 p.m. ET/PT). “It’s a thrilling show,” she raved. “Liev Schreiber is just brilliant! I can’t wait to hear what people have to say about this season!”
