Here’s an idea, not only should we deny Muslims from entering this country, we should round up all those already here and send them to detention camps until this war on terror is over. Hell we did it with the Japanese in WWII so we have a lot of experience at it….
Of course that is bullsh*t…
I am usually silent on matters of politics; I consider myself neither far left or far right. I consider myself on the side of common sense, which is somewhere in the middle and something we have not had in America for many years. Now acting out of fear we are denying persons seeking refuge the opportunity to escape a horrible enemy that is hell bent on destroying lives and tearing families apart. Instead our racist heads are rearing up once again as governor after governor is saying “We don’t want them here.”
What if the Native Americans had done the same to us? Or what if we had denied entry to the millions upon millions of European immigrants who sought refuge here at the turn of the last century?
Yet because we are suddenly opposed to all things Muslim, we will prevent innocent people the chance of safety and a better life. What if the roles were reversed? What if an enemy were indiscriminately killing people in the streets, or dragging out members of your family and beheading them just because they didn’t agree with a certain doctrine? How could you look at your children and tell them there was no escape, simply because of the racist views of a society? And let there be no doubt that to deny all simply because of who they are is racism in its purest form.
Are we taking a risk by letting them in? Of course we are. That’s why we must be as vigilant as possible and do everything we can to ensure that all who do enter are here for the one thing we all value; freedom. That and the safety of knowing that they will not be persecuted for who they are or the religion that they practice. That is what America was founded on after all.
I dare you to look into the face of a young child and tell them that they can’t enter this country, go ahead…now picture that as your own child. How would you tell them?
How many of you have ever visited a Mosque? Or a Synagogue for that matter? How many have tried to get to know the people who worship in such places, try to understand them? I have, and I can tell you that the vast majority of people, no matter the religion, simply want to live their lives, love their families and worship God in their own way.
Yet, we now want to lump an entire group of people together and deny them that which they seek more than anything, freedom and safety. Yes the attacks in Paris were horrible and many innocent people lost their lives. But now we, all of us, react by trying to pin the blame on an entire group of people, most of whom are innocent themselves? We did just that to Japanese-Americans in WWII and history has shown how wrong we were.
I have fought, and nearly died for this country. I have held young men as they took their final breaths, and consoled families after they were told that their son, husband, father, would never come home again.
There was a time when I was willing to give my life for this country, this way of life, our freedom. But frankly I am starting to change my mind. I am embarrassed that we as a country are raising our racist heads and denying the very same thing I fought for, and others died for: Freedom, liberty, safety and the American Dream.
Yes we must be vigilant, but we must never forget that we were all once immigrants, willing or otherwise. We were once scared, felt alone , and looked to a better, safer, life. There was Lady Liberty, ready to take us in:“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
We cannot now close that door.
Common sense has not prevailed for many years in America. It’s time we brought it back. We need to not be left wing or right wing, we need to simply be Americans. Let’s roll up our sleeves, practice our due diligence, cast out our racist views and do the right thing. Let’s not give the radicals in the world reason to preach hate against us; let’s show them and the rest of the world that love is still very real, that safety can be had, and that freedom will always outshine evil. It can be a light that shines in the darkest corners of the world and can light the way to save those who need it the most.
Let’s lift the lamp beside the golden door and light the way, give those needing it something they don’t now have, hope. Let’s throw out our racist past and bring in the huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Allow in those who deserve to be here, and deny those who would be our enemy. We must show our children and future generations that racism is a dying concept. Yes, we will be taking a chance, but it’s a chance we must take; the same chance our ancestors took when they first stepped upon these shores.
I have no doubt that there will be many against what I have written. I suspect there will be name calling, hate messages. But that’s okay, I respect the opinions of others, and I hope you respect mine. After all respecting one another is the first step to acceptance, and that should be the goal of every American citizen.
