Shaun Martin made a name for himself with Dallas based God’s Property as one of the masterminds behind their chart topping sound. Under the wing of gospel music icon Kirk Franklin (who needs no introduction) Martin has become not only a Grammy winning producer, he is one another exponent of the masterful Snarky Puppy, also Grammy winners. Martin has ventured out on his own with his debut album “7 Summers” which features jazz, R&B and hip-hop, released yesterday.
“7 Summers” is your summer soundtrack and features a smorgasbord from which music lovers can daily feast! The infusion of jazz, hip-hop and R&B stylings have everything your ears have hungered for. You’re familiarity with Snarky Puppy is the precursor to music like this. This groove music in all its complexity is increasing in popularity and Martin’s offering is the latest and inherently best in the genre. The best summation of “7 Summers” won’t come from a writer, listener, or even Martin himself. Martin’s dad sums up the second line celebration “One Big Party” in a single word: “Outtasight”!
In his hometown Dallas, he’s simply known as “Shaun”. Makes sense for Martin to be on first name basis with so many in Dallas, he can be seen and heard regularly at Dallas’ Friendship West Baptist Church led by Frederick D. Haynes and playing at Dallas’ #1 dive for live music, The Prophet Bar. He has been an integral part of so many projects based in Dallas-Fort Worth that he’s partly responsible for the musical shift that helped land many top gospel artists in the metroplex.
My early favorite listening to “7 Summers” is “Madiba”. I love South African music and the story of the late Nelson Mandela. I was in Hamamatsu, Japan when he died. I remember watching the funeral and hearing that Kirk had been stopped at the airport and invited to the funeral. This song in particular speaks not only to me, but world history. Rightfully so, “7 Summers” is note by note etching itself into musical history!” -Fred Willis
Martin has worked on other award winning artists the likes of: Fred Hammond, Tamela Mann, Erykah Badu, Crystal Aikin, Anthony Evans, Myron Butler & Levi, and Tasha Page Lockhart and The Walls Group on Sony’s Fo Yo’ Soul imprint owned by Kirk Franklin.
Martin has ventured out on his own to create the newest “gotta have” cd of the year, “7 Summers”. The album is a tip of the hat to everything Dallas, including the awesome musicians that helped craft the legendary sound. True to his roots, the album cover features a Polaroid of Martin as a kid with his lovely mother,Novella. The album was released to rave reviews. The Dallas Observer profiled Martin, who really shared all the intricacies that make “7 Summers” the musical gem it is. The Huffington Post chimed in and features three tracks from the album in Ari Sadowitz’s profile of the album.
