“Oh the places you’ll go, today is your day! Your mountain is waiting… So get on your way!”– Dr. Seuss. He may have died on September 24, 1991; nonetheless, Seuss’ stories remain a part of our lives. The esteemed Alhambra Theatre & Dining will feature the Broadway hit “Seussical the Musical” for the annual summer family show starting June 24, 2015.
About “Seussical the Musical”: This fantastical family musical is based on the books of Dr. Seuss, including favorites like “Horton Hears a Who!” “Horton Hatches the Egg,” and “Miss Gertrude McFuzz.” In the show, Horton hears a noise coming from a speck of dust on a clover and commits himself to protecting it and the “Whos”, who live on it. Jojo, a misfit Who that “doesn’t think normal thoughts,” struggles to find his place in the tiny Who society. Gertrude McFuzz tries to catch the attention of her love – the kind and compassionate Horton. Through mishaps and adventures, these unique characters finally find what they seek – their places in their world. “Seussical” premiered on Broadway in 2000 and was nominated for a Tony® Award and several Drama Desk® awards, including the award for Outstanding Music. Snyder Heating and Air is the presenting sponsor.
Jacksonville University’s acting instructor Jason Nettle is making his Alhambra directorial debut with “Seussical,” taking the reins from Tod Booth for this show. Most locals know Jason as the comic genius behind Lord Farquad in last summer’s “Shrek the Musical.” Some were lucky enough to see him in his brilliant one-man show that he wrote and performed commemorating the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. When Jason Nettle took on the assignment of directing his first show at the Alhambra, he was intrigued by the creative process, and is truly enjoying the heightened responsibility.
Jason’s comment about the show, “What our audience will find in this show is a world based totally on Dr. Seuss’ imagination and fueled by their own imaginations. It’s an opportunity to take a really fun journey with some bigger than life characters – 28 of them! – and have a lot of fun.”
