Update: Juice was rescued! Golden Paw Rescue pulled her from the shelter and will be getting her the care that she needs. Thanks to everyone for sharing her story!
Juice is a sick, senior dog. She is feeling so sick that she only lifted her head when a volunteer tried to interact with her. She is desperately in need of help.
She is a nine-year-old pit bull who urgently needs medical attention. Juice has skin problems (which do not appear to be anything contagious). She is severely depressed at the shelter and no wonder. She is in the notorious west wing where even the shelter director admitted people seldom go. When the volunteer tried to call her over to interact with her, she just lay on the concrete floor and looked over. Her tail remained between her legs.
Was she too scared to walk over? Watch her video (thank you to Miami Shelter Big, Bullies, Black & Been Around) and see what you think. Her back leg looks like it has wounds all over and shakes. Her eyes are the worst part of the video. She looks like she’s given up hope. She raises her head and then lays it back down as if she’s given up hope.
The volunteer taking the video comments, “This girl is really sick.” The person at the Miami Dade County call center told me she has an upper respiratory infection. He could not find any information about treatment that Juice has received at the shelter. Her Facebook thread also says she has an eye infection. (Note to shelter director: Please have call center people refrain from referring to animals as “it.” That sounds very insensitive. They could take the extra two seconds it would take to see the sex and use “he” or “she” instead.)
The bottom line is that Juice might have the best personality in the world, but it’s not going to show while she is shut in a cage with so many medical issues. She is a senior, black, pit bull at a shelter where thousands of dogs are killed every year. She is not a cute puppy or even a fluffy older dog. She has medical issues that would make it easy for the shelter to say that she was “euthanized” to prevent suffering. That would enable them to say that because she was killed “for health reasons,” it doesn’t count against their supposed “no-kill” status.
Please network Juice! Her only hope is getting a rescue interested in her. She is urgently in need of medical care. She can be killed at any time! The shelter has been sent an email (to firstname.lastname@example.org) requesting more information about her condition and what their vets have said and done for her. This article will be updated with that information when it is received. (Note: six hours later, still no response from shelter) Her current status will be available on her PetHarbor page.
