New Hampshire State Senator Donna Soucy (Senate District 18) endorsed Joyce Craig for mayor of Manchester on August 27, joining State Senator Lou D’Allesandro (Senate District 20) in the Craig camp. The two senators, both Queen City citizens, represent nine of Manchester’s 12 wards.
First elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives when she was 23 years old, Senator Soucy has had a distinguished political career. Having also served as an alderman from Manchester’s Ward 6 and as a School Board Committee member, Soucy is considered a leading contender for the governor’s office should Maggie Hassan make a bid for the U.S. Senate.
In her endorsement statement, Soucy said, “Joyce Craig is the leader we need to get our city back on track. Having served on the School Board with Joyce, I know that she has long been a leader in Manchester and a strong advocate for better schools.”
Referring to the 2014 budget authored by Craig that earmarked more funds toward schools and public safety, Soucy said, “As an Alderman, she has been instrumental in making our streets safer by leading the charge to hire more police officers and improving our city’s infrastructure. I am proud to endorse Joyce Craig for mayor because I know she will be the problem-solver and strong leader that we need to move Manchester forward.”
Stating that she was honored to be endorsed by Donna Soucy, Craig said, “We are the largest city in New Hampshire and our leader must have a more effective voice in Concord. The Mayor’s failures on education, curbing the heroin epidemic and infrastructure have taken a heavy toll on our city.”
Craig touched on a major theme of her campaign, that she will bring a more cooperative, less confrontational leadership style to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen if she is elected. “Time and again, Mayor Gatsas’s inability to work with others has harmed Manchester’s interests. During his six long years as Mayor, Manchester has missed out on numerous opportunities due to Mayor Gatsas’s inability to work with others. As mayor, I will keep an open and ongoing dialogue with state officials to make sure our city is getting the resources we need. I will also work with local, county, state, and federal officials to improve our schools, combat the heroin epidemic, fix our crumbling roads, and meet the priorities of Manchester.”
In addition to State Senators Donna Soucy and Lou D’Allesandro, Joyce Craig has been endorsed by State Representatives Jane Beaulieu, Robert Backus, Patricia Cornell, Mary Freitas, Mary Heath, Joseph Lachance, Timothy Smith, and Robert Walsh. Ward 3 Alderman Pat Long, who also serves as a State Representative, has endorsed Craig, as have Ward 10 Alderman Bill Barry and Ward 11 Alderman Norm Gamache.
