Selena Gomez looks sensational after her recent weight loss but said being fat-shamed after gaining a few pounds inspired her new album, “Revival.” Gomez, who has since lost weight, said she channeled the hurt she felt after being fat-shamed into her music.
“I was getting a lot of hate for my body and ‘You’re gaining weight,'” Selena told Extra Sept. 23. “I would be lying if I said it didn’t kind of hurt my feelings, but I kind of channeled that into my music. I felt like everybody was saying so much and I’m like, ‘I need to say something.'”
Gomez’s new songs, “Survivors,” “Kill ’em with Kindness” and “Rise,” encourage fans to be positive and ignore haters. “I think this is the best thing I’ve ever done in my whole career and I’m so excited,” said Selena.
In May 2015, Gomez made headlines after slamming a fat-shaming troll who told her she needed to work out. The heated exchange quickly escalated after an Instagram user wrote to Gomez, “You need to work out. Please stop eating junk food.”
In response, a Selena Gomez fan account replied, “Stop being so judgmental. Her curves are beautiful.” The fat-shaming troll fired back, saying Gomez, who admitted gaining a few pounds, should tone up if she wants to stay in show business.
At that point, Selena jumped in and pointed out that she’s already in show biz and she does work out. “You’re disgusting,” Gomez wrote on Instagram. “I’m IN the business and I could care less about what ‘they’ or you said I should look like. And I do work out. It’s not your place to tell anyone what they should or should not do.”
Selena, who has been slender all her life, acknowledged she had gained weight but said she loved her body exactly as it was. “I love being happy with me y’all,” Gomez wrote on Instagram. “There’s more to love.”
In 2011, Selena was hospitalized for malnutrition after confessing she lived on a junk food diet. “I do eat. The problem is I don’t eat right,” said Gomez. “I love everything that’s possibly not good for me.”
Selena was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after suffering from blood pressure-related health problems in June 2011. Gomez was later released after tests revealed she was malnourished and suffering from an iron deficiency. Selena was diagnosed with lupus several years ago, Celebrity Health & Fitness reported.
Gomez, who dated Justin Bieber and is pals with Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato, said she stays grounded by being friends with non-celebrities.
“I think it’s equally as important to have people who aren’t in the industry,” said Selena. “I live with two roommates and one of them’s a realtor and the other one works for a charity. I’m able to recognize how people treat me differently than they treat my friends who aren’t famous.”
