It is a little easier to go around downtown Atlanta now that the streetcar has begun making its rounds. Introduced last year and free to ride for the rest of 2015, the streetcar makes regular stops at designated locations in the downtown area. Whether you want to reach attraction or businesses, hotels, restaurants or parks, the streetcar can get you there!
Cultural attractions include the Rialto Center for the Arts, the Balzer Theater and the Children’s Museum. Tourist attractions such as the Georgia Dome, Philips Arena and Pemberton Place can be accessed via the streetcar as well. The Commerce Club and Grady Hospital are along the streetcar corridor as are several educational institutions such as Georgia State University and the Fulton County Library’s Central Branch.
More than a dozen downtown restaurants and hotels are on the streetcar corridor as well as three park spaces and four shopping venues including the Sweet Auburn Market and Americas Mart. The streetcar makes 12 stops in all in a continuous circuit and has 5 MARTA station transit connections if you need that for your onward or return journey. The streetcar runs every 10-15 minutes and operates 7 days a week though hours may vary so your best bet is to check on times and transit information before hand. If you are not in a hurry though then the wait for the next car to come along isn’t too long.
The streetcar can handle up to 200 passengers at any given time so never worry about how crowded it might get. For special announcements and holiday hours, remember to stay tunes on their social media links where they are pretty active with details and updates. The streetcar can accommodate passengers with disabilities and is also green in that it is all-electric and reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. So not only would you be seeing the city conveniently but also in an eco-friendly way!
This is also a great mode of transport for any special events happening in the area or in any of the venues that can be accessed by the streetcar. This way you do not have to worry about finding a parking sport in the city, which are usually few and far between to come by during peak festival season or other event times. Keep in mind though that you cannot carry big packages on the streetcar and while it there is place for everyone, be mindful that your personal belongings are not sprawled all over the seat you occupy.
Safe riding, and a pleasant streetcar experience to you and yours!
