The Sealskinz Sea Leopard Glove is designed for comfort during a variety of outdoor activities. By incorporating a waterproof outer shell of polyester and polyurethane with a breathable microporous inner liner the gloves provide protection from wind and rain. With palms and fingers covered in a mesh of highly abrasive Ax Suede Quattro 8, the glove offers superior friction for holding power while reducing water absorption. A micro-porous inner liner wicks away moisture and is soft to the touch. The glove’s snug fit is designed for maximum finger dexterity while still being comfortable and an elastic band helps to seal the glove at the wrist. The gloves are available in both men’s and women’s sizes. Sealskinz has a sizing chart on their website and all their products come with a 100% “no quibble” refund guarantee.
Since launching in 1999 in the home of inclement weather, the United Kingdom, Sealskinz has been a pioneer in Aqua Dynamic Design. Partnering with athletes in sports as diverse as mountaineering, sailing and cycling helps to ensure that Sealskinz products provide performance and comfort. Operating under the company mandate, “Whatever the weather, whatever the activity, our purpose is to enable you to go further, go longer, leave first and return last” Sealskinz has become a force in the endurance accessories industry.
During an eight day canoe trip in the rainy Yukon the Sealskinz Sea Leopard Glove was put to use every day. During light rain the glove performed as advertised. Water would just bead up on the glove and roll off, keeping the hands dry. The Ax Suede Quattro 8 mesh on the palms and fingers allowed the paddle to be gripped even as water ran off the gloves. A minor problem came up when trying to put the gloves back on after removal. The inner liner had a tendency to partially pull out during removal, which made it difficult to reinsert fingers into the glove. Quite a bit of finger wiggling was required to get the gloves back on. A larger problem was encountered because of operator error. Water was allowed to roll down a jacket sleeve and reached the non-waterproof inner liner. At that point, once the inner liner got wet, they stayed wet even though they still gripped the paddle well. Wringing the gloves out and hanging on a line overnight was enough to dry them for the next day. In the future more attention would be used in making sure the rain jacket sleeves were tightly sealed around the bottom of the glove. A different Sealskinz glove that provides a Velcro wrist band would be another alternative.
The Sealskinz Sea Leopard Glove worked quite well as a paddling glove in all conditions except heavy rain. Before the inner liner got wet, the glove was comfortable, fit well and kept the hands dry.
