The Seattle Seahawks (3-4) went back to their bread and butter thursday night and the result was a straight beat down of division rivals San Francisco 49ers (2-5). In the Seahawks 20 to 3 win over the Niners, Seattle recommitted to the run game and unleashed the Legion of Boom on Colin Kaepernick and his hapless offensive teammates.
Seattle’s 12-play, 61-yard opening drive that was capped off by a Marshawn Lynch one yard TD run set the tone for the rest of the game. In the opening drive, Lynch carried the ball nine times for 38 yards. Lynch finished the game with 122 yards rushing on 27 carries. With the offense seemingly in rhythm, the Seattle defense stepped up to the task of shutting down the San Fran offense and forced the 49ers to punt on all four of its first half possession.
Steven Hauschka’s 49yard field goal to start the second quarter gave Seattle some breathing room and Russell Wilson’s 43 yard touchdown pass to rookie sensation Tyler Lockett sealed the deal for the Seahawks who went into the locker room with a 17-0 lead. A lead the defense was dead set on not letting slip away given recent late game collapses.
“Yeah, it is felt familiar,” cornerback Richard Sherman said on Seahawks.com after the game.“Just finishing a game. We’ve felt good the past couple of games, it’s not like we didn’t feel good in those games, but there were some mistakes in the end and some communication errors. Today we played a complete game.”
Except for a 3rd quarter field goal, the Seattle defense played a perfect game. San Francisco had more punts ( 9) than first downs (8). The 49ers offense was 1-11 on third down conversions and finished the game with 142 total yards on offense.
While the stellar defensive showing was a team effort, the Seattle defensive line created a pass rush that kept San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick running for his life all night long. Kaepernick was sacked six times and defensive lineman Micheal Bennet was credited with 3.5 of the sacks.
“The defense played really well, all night,” Carroll said after the game. “One drive gets them some points, but other than that it was a great night, and a fantastic night of rushing the passer, really highlighted by Michael Bennett.”
While the Seattle defensive play was exemplary, the offense continued it’s struggles despite scoring the 20 points in the victory. Quarterback Russell Wilson was sacked five times and threw two interceptions giving him five for the season. Wilson had seven interceptions in all of 2013. This seasons turnover bug has left Seahawks Head Coach searching for answers he has yet to find.
“I don’t even want to talk about it,” Carroll said. “I don’t know, there’s not a place in my brain for this. I don’t understand. Minus two and we win, I don’t know how that happens. What’s going to be really exiting is if we turn this thing in the right direction, we’re going to really be in great shape.”
San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick is 1-5 in his career against the Seahawks (including playoffs). The 49ers have averaged 10.3 PPG against the Seahawks in Kaepernick’s starts. The 49ers scored 10 points combined in 2 games vs. the Seahawks last year
