School Zone Publishing is an educational publisher that creates fun, unique and engaging tools, resources and games that help young children learn. School Zone Publishing understands the correlation between fun and learning and they infuse this philosophy into the development of all their products.
School Zone started almost 40 years ago when James Hoffman, Ed.D., and his wife Joan Hoffman, M.A., began a retail supply outlet for teachers and quickly identified a need for at-home learning materials to help parents support and supplement their children’s classroom instruction. School Zone Publishing subsequently emerged as the market leader in workbooks and flash cards for preschoolers through sixth graders. According to the company’s website:
With research-based content, designed by educators and delivered across multiple learning platforms, School Zone connects with kids “where they are.” Software and downloads, workbooks and flash cards—all are crafted through a child’s eyes, while integrating parent/teacher standards of precision and accountability. In every detail, innovation meets imagination and timeless tradition.
School Zone is still a family-owned business, focused on excellence, responsiveness to customers, alertness to emerging technology, and commitment to community. Now in her 80s, Joan Hoffman is still involved with the development of products and content, as the company constantly updates its tablets and other items with new features and content, reflective of changing standards, evolving teaching methods, and overall best practices. For instance, key School Zone math workbooks adhere to both Common Core State Standards and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards.
To date, School Zone has produced 350 million workbooks, flash cards and educational videos. They are presently working on a TV show titled “Charlie and Company” that teaches preschoolers basic lessons via chronicling the adventures of a golden retriever named Charlie and his teacher owner, Miss Ellie. “Charlie & Company” fuses live-action with animation to find creative ways to teach preschoolers, kindergartners, and first graders important core skills. Featuring original music by well-renowned singer/songwriter Brian Vander Ark, the series follows Charlie, Miss Ellie, and all of Charlie’s animal friends as they learn about the alphabet, counting, creativity, reading, math and more. Now in its second season, producers hope this well-received series will find a spot on TV, but it is primarily being marketed to air on School Zone’s tablets.
One of School Zone’s best-selling products is an award-winning tablet called “Little Scholar.” Retailing for $129.99, the Little Scholar tablet comes with over 200 preloaded educational apps and it can be played with or without Wi-Fi. It also comes with a “reporting” feature for parents and, of course, access to “Charlie & Company.”
Little Scholar innovatively teaches children basic English and math lessons important for school success.
In October 2015 School Zone launched an initiative for World Teachers’ Day, called the World Teachers’ Day Giveaway. Any preschool, kindergarten or first grade teacher in the US to enter to win one of 10 School Zone classroom bundles valued at $400 apiece. To learn more, visit the company’s website.
