It is time for the bell to ring! Yep, school is starting all over this crazy land and it is time to be cool when you go back to school. No matter what grade you are in or no matter what college level you are at….it is all the same. You just want to fit in and be cool! When you started grade school it was all about trying not to miss your mom and trying to sit still until recess. In middle school it’s all about the right backpack and tennis shoes and fitting in with the right group; fearing the fact that you may not have friends! Then high school comes along before you know it and you’re thinking about why you have to be there when there is still lots of summer left! Oh high school! The right outfit, the right hair, the right friends, hoping not to get cut from the sport you want to participate in, hoping to get the attention of that girl or this boy…wow! It is just too much sometimes! And then there is college. In some cases, you may have landed a scholarship in a subject matter or a sport….in other cases you may think that you want to try a couple of classes at the local community college. No matter what your decision or what the trend, the fears are there also! What if you can’t handle your room mate, what if you don’t have enough money to buy supplies or eat! What if you can’t keep up with all that is demanded of you?
Here are some tips to get you through these next few months of tears, too much homework, not enough time for fun and all the other anxieties that accumulate because of that awful….dreadful….school! First of all relax! Almost everyone feels the same way you do! Let’s start with time, specifically getting up and out on time. One secret is to become totally familiar with the school you will be attending by visiting it several times. All schools whether elementary or college are very organized in their layout and once you become familiar with that layout you save time. Start your school wake up every day for at least one week before you actually attend. If you are 5 years old or 25 years old if you follow this trick you will actually feel better the first day because you are already in the routine of waking up at the right time.
Next the school supplies. Again whether you are starting kindergarten or college there is a list available of the needed supplies for that class. Make sure you purchase these items well in advance, not the night before as the gamble is not worth it. Have lots of pencils and pens and paper ready to go. Get everything in the perfect backpack and walk around with it so you may adjust the straps to you and the weight in the pack. Include a few pieces of candy, a bandaid, hair accessories like clips and rubber bans, a container for water or a small water bottle, a mini deodorant (if you use it), a small comb, and body spray. You need to smell good and look good all day. Another thing you may want to include if you wear laced tennis shoes, put an extra pair of laces in your back pack. Always be prepared to start right in the first day…..never give the excuse that you didn’t get the list!
Now let’s move on to the hair. If you are old enough, boy or girl, you want to give the glow of summer when you start back to school. One quick way to do that is to have a tiny bit of highlights added to your hair. Specifically the area surrounding your face. Too much and you look ready for Halloween, so be careful. This can be done in a salon, or even at a beauty school to save money. Do this at least a few weeks before school starts. If you are getting your hair trimmed or cut, do it at least two weeks before school starts.
Now, the first day outfit. The easiest way to fit in is wearing blue jeans and a shirt. It could be too hot so for a guy, just wear shorts and a shirt. Cotton button up shirts look great with shorts. T shirts with your favorite band screened on the front is always fun. Stay away from offensive messages as they are not cool. Tennis shoes are easy and there are thousands to choose from. If you can just buy one good pair of vans or converse it’s worth it. Look on line for deals. Girls wear just about the same thing, jeans and a great little shirt or tee. If it’s too hot wear cut offs or a summer dress. Be careful. Never show too much skin. It’s not cool. Girls’ sandals or tennis shoes look cute with just about anything. Take the time to manicure your nails and toenails. It says you care about yourself.
Now you look good, you smell good and you are prepared. Have a great time and remember there is always someone cuter or smarter or even more talented. Don’t ever compare yourself to them. Just be yourself, be polite, be kind and your world will be more fun and less stressful! Never argue with your teacher or coach! They have more experience than you do. School is a time to learn about subjects and life in general. If you can get all of your work completed on time, it will help you to land your first important job. Happy school days!
