Halloween this year started in August at ScareLA. Claiming to be the ultimate summer Halloween event, ScareLa held at the Pasadena Convention Center, did not disappoint. The two day event was a fun weekend of panels, performances, games, movie screenings, makeup demonstrations, amazing vendors, haunted houses, craft workshops, and cosplaying.
Halloween event promoters big and small came to ScareLA to announce why you should come to their events. There were the huge ones like Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, Six Flags Magic Mountains’s Fright Fest, Knott’s Scary Farm, The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor and the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride. There was a special area with mini haunts from all over the Los Angeles and Orange County area, so you could get a small taste of what they have to offer. Whether or not you like big events with giant screams or something that’s just a little scary is more your speed, there’s a haunted event perfect for you. At ScareLA incorporating diversity is an important part of the convention. “Halloween is a lot of things to a lot of people,” Lora Ivanova, one of the events producers shared. Each year the ScareLA team carefully select who will take part in the event to make sure there is something for everyone and every taste.
Some of the people coming to the ScareLA have their own home haunts and were looking for gore-ific new ideas and products to add to their haunted houses. Some folks came for the performances, some for the panels and classes, some for the contests and games, and some just to show off their Halloween cosplay. Many of the people asked were just there for the pure love of Halloween. Getting the chance to revel in it more than just in October is the best thing they could think of doing. Halloween isn’t just for Halloween anymore, it has become a year round monster love affair.
The new interactive zombie game Apocalypse was a huge success. Presented by Ganton Lighting and The Reel Guise Cosplay, participants got to see if they could successfully get around the showroom without catching the zombie virus. Throughout the show were other interactive games like The Vault of Darkness and Alone. There were three virtual reality experiences: The Seance took you through a surreal haunted house, Nevermind and Virtual Screams use the Oculus Rift to make their experiences seem more real.
Saturday Night ScareLA presented The Bloody Ballroom. The first Halloween party of the year was a blast with performances from some ghoulish characters: Monte Revolta, The Ghoulmaster and the Blood Drums. Ending with a traditional costume contest everyone had a bloody good time.
