“Scandal” aired the steamy, sexy, twisty, bendy season five premiere as part of ABC’s TGIT Thursday return on Sept. 24. Gladiators at large were left breathless, panting for more in the season four finale when Olivia (Kerry Washington) answered Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) with that sly, sweet smile telling him they finally do anything they want. And boy did they ever.
Kerry Washington made the talk show rounds this week to promote “Scandal’s” highly-anticipated return. In fact, on the morning of the premiere she stopped by “Live! With Kelly and Michael” and dished that there was a lot of “rolling around in the sheets” in the first episode. She was right about that, indeed and it’s safe to say Olitz fans everywhere were fanning themselves to turn down the heat.
Heading into “Scandal’s” fifth season, proud mom Kerry Washington (her daughter is 17 months old) and Tony Goldwyn still have smoking hot, undeniable chemistry. But here’s something we’ve noticed as the seasons progress: It seems like Fitz’s dark side is showing itself more and more often. Case in point is when Fitz and Olivia have a bonafide lover’s quarrel in the oval office. You could almost feel the sting of some venom as Fitz threatens Olivia that if she goes public about the Prince of Caldonia’s wife being murdered, she would be prosecuted. Shudder, shudder!
We want to believe in the fairy tale. We have always wanted to believe in the fairy tale happily-ever-after for Fitz and Olivia. And we almost had it in this episode and then Fitz’s dark side rears its dashingly handsome head. This couple has issues – major issues. Let’s not forget Fitz smothered a Supreme Court Justice with a pillow. He also beat a very defenseless Jake (Scott Foley) to a pulp, mostly because he didn’t like sharing Liv with him. This side of Fitz just doesn’t fit in with the jam-making in Vermont Fitz we (and Olivia) have been pining for.
In that moment when his eyes turn cold and hard and he threatens to prosecute Olivia, we must admit some fear crept in. It was impossible to hold back the immediate, burning question: Uh oh. Is this turn-on-a-dime man really all that good for her? Is Olivia making a mistake by giving herself up to Fitz?
Tony Goldwyn and Kerry Washington have this obvious, easygoing chemistry that almost feels like a choreographed dance in the passionate scenes between Fitz and Olivia; especially in their tender, close-up whispery moments. But, Olivia was hit hard with the harsh reality that love is not all a jar of jam. She wisely tells him as much, when he wants them to parade themselves out in front of America for all see.
Olivia is also a little surprised when Fitz tells her he served Mellie (Bellamy Young) with divorce papers (Woot! Woot!) Then she tells him a harsh truth: They need to slow down and fix what’s broken between them before they become the public “spectacle” that they will surely become. He calms down a little and agrees with her. And we breathe a short-lived sigh of relief because, bam! Sally Langston is splashing their affair all over national television. Uh oh. So much for waiting!
But what, pray tell, is going to happen now? Huck is off the deep end. He begs Olivia to fix him and she very sternly informs him she can’t. Then he turns to Jake for help (which is more potentially frightening than encouraging). Mellie is reeling from Fitz’s divorce papers and she doesn’t seem to have a friend in Cyrus (Jeff Perry) or Lizzy Bear (Portia de Rossi). So, everything is turned on its head for everyone.
Even the “Scandal” Facebook team is asking their followers“What does this mean for Olitz?” in the caption preceding a video clip posted on Sept. 25 featuring Sally Langston’s catty announcement. Here’s hoping Fitz and Olivia stand strong and fight the impending storm. They’re facing some really rough waters now, let’s hope they’re not pulled under before they finally find their happily ever after. Olivia may not like everything Fitz does but she loves him (and so do we, don’t we?) The crazy, twisty rollercoaster has pulled out of the “Scandal” station. There’s no turning back, so we’d better buckle up and prepare for the ride.
“Scandal” airs on ABC as part of Shondaland’s TGIT Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/8C.
