Safety in the home is a necessary concern — but few seem to consider that just because “it never happens to me” ain’t necessarily so. And after I got relocated for almost 2 years due to a fire trashing my apt, I’ve learned not to take safety for granted.
So a fire happens in your apt building or home and you’re seated by the door fully dressed and ready to walk out? Lucky you — that’s not a realistic scenario. More likely a fire will happen when you’re asleep or on the john, in other words at a time when you’re more likely to be discombobulated. And should the fire really be doing its thing and there’s smoke getting in or blocking your way, well, lets not think about it (there we go again with thinking nothing bad ever happens….).
All the above is why I was glad to get my hands on Safety IQ’s SAVER Emergency Breath System, which may look like a cylindrical spy camera inside a vertical plastic case, but in reality is a means to protect against smoke inhalation and also provide the means for getting the heck out of where the fire is.
SAVER comes ready to go and isn’t to be used until needed — which is fine by me (think of it like a fire extinguisher that’s ready to be used and fully charged). The first thing it provides is a breathing device; this aids in removing smoke so that good air can go in and keep the person thinking clearly. You pull off the two end caps so as to separate the breathing section from a flashlight and then install the nose-grip over your snout and breathe in via the mouthpiece (not having accessibility to a fully face mask means you got to keep the nostrils sealed).
Of course you’re not just standing there waiting for help — you want to get out. Should the fire be at night when the lights are off, or even when they’re on but there’s smoke, a smoke-penetrating LED flashlight would be might helpful. So it’s there as an integrated component (along with some loud noise coming along for the ride). Good thought. And yes it meets industry standards re: the filters because it wouldn’t have made it to being a live indiegogo campaign otherwise.
There might not be anything sexy about a fire, in fact it’s what no one wishes to have happen. But if the old boy scout motto ever meant anything, it does now — because the SAVER Emergency Breath System could be the best friend in a crisis that you ever had sitting on the night table or wherever a quick grab can be had just in case it’s needed. You can’t put a price on happiness, but safety, well that’s another story. For $99 retail you can be prepared — but go for a 4 pack so you’re not the only one who can use it if the unthinkable happens.
