Boulevard Brewing Company (Kansas City, Missouri) recently announced that their limited release Smokestack Series offering Rye-on-Rye is making its 2015 return beginning this week.
Rye-on-Rye is listed as a Specialty Grain Beer from Boulevard that is a blend of 33% Rye Ale and 67% Rye Ale aged in Templeton Rye Whiskey barrels. The beer starts with two types of malted rye to provide the beer with a signature peppery and spicy note that creates a beautiful complexity added to the standard malt sweetness. The barrel-aging process further adds to the rye spiciness while supplying notes of caramel and toffee as well. Once the beer is fully matured and blended, the hops are there to provide just enough bittering to impart some balance and complete a wonderfully nuanced drinking experience. For more information on Rye-on-Rye, here’s the full description from the brewery’s website:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Citra and Ahtanum hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.
Rye-on-Rye is a very limited release offering that is available on draft and in corked and caged 750 ml bottles. Boulevard has reported that Rye-on-Rye is being delivered in the Kansas City area as of September 22, and the rest of their distribution footprint should start seeing the offering in the near future. The 2015 release calendar for Boulevard has Rye-on-Rye slated for availability during the month of October, so just go ahead and count on that timeline for it to start showing up in Alabama. If you are at all a fan of rye in your beer or whiskey, this offering should be a no-brainer for you when you spot it on a shelf next month. Do yourself a favor and pick one up because this brew is certainly a rye experience that cannot be missed. Prost!
