Montoya Fiber Studio, located on the north side of Evanston, is a typical, cozy yarn shop. That word, “cozy,” is often used to describe painfully small spaces for socializing, even when there is more than enough room to display all that is sold in the store. Shopping is a breeze, but bringing ten of your closest friends to knit and drink coffee and eat snacks in the middle of the store is not. This usually no-big-deal shortcoming becomes more pronounced during the holidays, when stores are having parties and get-togethers to celebrate good cheer, finished projects, and gift-giving. Owners Cathy and Fred Montoya have decided to take matters into their own hands this year, moving their holiday party to the festive Curt’s Cafe, instead of struggling to fit everyone into the store.
Held on December 8 of this year from 5:45p.m. to 8:00p.m., Curt’s Cafe and the Montoyas are joining forces for a festive yarn and holiday celebration. For only a $15 reservation cost, party attendees will be treated to an all-you-can-eat taco bar, guacamole, sides, and holiday desserts, in addition to the option to bring their own wine or beer, or purchasing non-alcoholic beverages from Curt’s. The party will also include an end-of-year project show-and-tell, a chance to win store prizes, and an optional stash exchange. Party attendees can bring a pre-wrapped ball of natural-fiber yarn or kit valued at $10 or more, and anyone who brings a package will be able to take a package. The yarn must still have the label on it, and be wrapped so that the recipient cannot see what is inside the package.
If you have that ugly holiday sweater that only gets to be worn once a year, then have no fear: Montoya will also be sponsoring an ugly sweater contest for a store prize. The winner will be determined by party attendee voting. Whether or not attendees want to participate in all optional festivities, knitting and crochet projects are welcome for crafting during the party.
To reserve your spot, customers can drop by the store directly to pay for their reservation. The store is located at 2566 Prairie Avenue in Evanston, and can be accessed by both the Central Street Metra and CTA stations, or by bus. While Montoya can accept credit card payments for the party, cash and check payments are encouraged. The reservation must be made by December 1. Curt’s Cafe is located just under a mile west of the store on Central Street, and can also be accessed by bus.
Despite the lack of square footage in their retail space, Montoya Fiber Studio would love to see you at their remote holiday party. There will be enough room for food, drink, knitting and crochet, gift exchanges, and the ever-popular ugly sweater. Be sure to make your reservation as soon as possible.
