According to CBC News on Wednesday, the Calgary Stampeders have traded offensive lineman Aaron Picton to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for offensive lineman Randy Richards. Picton will remain in the province of Saskatchewan for the time being because he is currently playing for the University of Regina Rams.
Richards is a native of Kingston, Jamaica who is currently 24 years old. Listed at 6’3″, 305 pounds, Richards played his college football career at Missouri State. Richards also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Diego Chargers in the National Football League.
This is without a doubt a trade where the Stampeders are trying to improve their offensive line depth now at the expense of their future. It should also be noted that the Stampeders traded an international player to the Roughriders for a national player. Picton was the Stampeders’s sixth round selection, 53rd overall by the Stampeders in the 2015 Canadian Football League draft and spent training camp with the Stampeders.
The Stampeders are currently first in the Western Division with a CFL best record of 10 wins and three losses. The Roughriders are last in the Western Division with a CFL worst record of two wins and 11 losses.
